Seeing Seraphina's smile look more like a grimace gave Ms. Crane immense satisfaction.
...
At the city hospital's maternity ward.
Hester hung up the phone and sat back down next to Chiara in the waiting area.
"Who was that?" Chiara asked.
"Ms. Crane." Hester dropped her phone into her purse, offering a faint smile. "She said Seraphina is in town."
Chiara frowned. "What is she doing here?"
"What do you think?" Hester said dryly. "She knows Julian is here. She's terrified we're going to reconcile, so she panicked and followed him."
"She really wants to have her cake and eat it too. Like a ghost that won't go away."
Just as Chiara finished speaking, she glanced up and froze. "What is he doing here?"
"Who?"
Chiara jutted her chin toward the hallway. "See for yourself."
Hester turned her head.
Julian was striding toward them. Dressed in a sharp black suit, his tall figure commanded attention. He looked like he had rushed over.
Hester's eyes turned instantly frosty.
He stopped in front of them, his deep gaze locking onto Hester. "Is the checkup finished?"
Hester refused to acknowledge him. She stared straight ahead, pretending he didn't exist.
Chiara glanced at Hester, sighed quietly, and stood up. "Everything looks normal, though we're still waiting on the DNA test results. The doctor did emphasize that she's a bit underweight, so she needs to focus on eating more."
"Keep digging. Don't tunnel-vision on one suspect. Use what we have and cast a wider net."
"Understood."
Julian rubbed his temples. He knew Melody Monroe was just a pawn. Whoever was hiding in the shadows had started plotting long before he ever realized it. He used to think the kidnapping five years ago was the beginning. But looking at the new evidence, the conspiracy ran much deeper, and started much earlier.
Who was it?
He had investigated everyone with a motive. Still nothing.
The enemy was in the dark, while he was in the light. One wrong move, and he would lose everything.
His phone vibrated against his palm.
He looked down. The caller ID read: *Seraphina*.
Julian's dark eyes narrowed slightly. He accepted the call. "Seraphina... alright. I'll be right there."
