Broken Vows and Buried Twins novel Chapter 250

"Pfft! Cough, cough—"

Behind the front desk, the clerk choked on her drink, scrambling for tissues to wipe the counter as she coughed violently.

Seraphina shot her a venomous glare.

The clerk waved her hands frantically. "I—I didn't hear anything! Please, carry on!"

The painfully obvious lie made Seraphina's face flush deep red, then drain of color. She glared at Hester, her chest heaving as she fought to suppress her raging fury. Because the clerk was sitting right there, she couldn't break character!

"Hester, I just came here to thank you out of the goodness of my heart. Why do you always have to attack me?" She lowered her head, delicately dabbing at nonexistent tears in the corner of her eyes, while discreetly shooting another glance at the front desk.

The clerk had grabbed a magazine and was holding it directly in front of her face, pretending to read intently.

Seraphina took a deep, shaky breath, forcing herself to calm down. She couldn't lose her temper here. She couldn't afford a public screaming match.

Hester watched her, her eyes completely deadpan. Even the best performance got boring if you watched it enough times.

Standing on the stairs, Hester looked down at Seraphina's sickeningly fake face. "I don't understand why you keep buzzing around me. If you want Julian, go work on him. Why perform for the soon-to-be ex-wife? Do you think the more I hate you, the more he'll love you?"

"Hester, why are you saying these awful things?" Seraphina looked up, her voice trembling with tears. "Julian only takes care of me because of Adrian! I never wanted to fight with you over anything. Even if Caden likes you more, I haven't said a single word of complaint. What more do you want from me?"

"I will never be satisfied with you."

Hester stared straight into her eyes, her gaze glacial. "I don't hate you because you're his sister-in-law or Caden's mother. I just genuinely find you repulsive. Looking at you ruins my appetite."

Seraphina froze. She slipped her hand into her purse and hit the button on a hidden voice recorder. Sniffling pitifully, her voice broke into a tragic sob. "Are you trying to drive me to my death? We're both women. You're about to be a mother. Why can't you leave me a way out?"

Hester caught the subtle movement of her hand. She smirked, her eyes dripping with absolute contempt.
