Before Julian could finish his sentence, his phone buzzed in his pocket.

He pulled it out.

It was Leon.

"I need to take this," he said, answering the call. "What is it?"

"Sir, Seraphina is here," Leon reported, sounding incredibly stressed. "She's crying and causing a scene, insisting on taking the young master away."

Julian's face darkened instantly. "Keep her out. I'm coming down."

Hanging up, he looked at Hester. "She's at the room trying to take him. I have to go."

She frowned. "She's not really going to take him. She's just making a scene to trigger another episode. Can't you see what she's doing?"

"I know exactly what I'm doing regarding her."

"You know what you're doing?"

Hester sneered. "If you did, he wouldn't be in this condition! You always have an excuse. She's his biological mother, so you indulge her. She was widowed while pregnant, so you pity her.

"When her petty schemes didn't threaten his life, I could bite my tongue if you chose to look the other way. But look at him now! You clearly suspect her, yet the second she sheds a few tears and throws a tantrum, your resolve crumbles."

Julian stared at her, his Adam's apple bobbing hard.

"Hester," his dark eyes were profound. "His injury was my oversight. I swear to you, this will never happen again."

"You swear to me?" She let out a bitter laugh. "We're separated and on the verge of divorce. You don't owe me any promises. The only reason I care about her actions is because I don't want to see that boy get hurt again."

He pressed his lips together. "Just stop engaging with her. From today on, I'll have someone watching over Caden around the clock."

"Why do you keep telling me to stay away from her?" she demanded, searching his face for answers.

But his eyes were like deep pools of ink, giving nothing away.
