The second she opened her mouth to speak, Caden seized the opportunity and popped the candy right in.
The sweet and sour flavor of orange instantly exploded across her tongue. Hester furrowed her brow, the strange, complicated tug in her heart pulling even deeper.
The truth was, she actually really liked orange drops...
After sucking on the candy for a moment, Hester felt the dizziness begin to recede. When she glanced down, she was completely startled to realize Caden was still holding tightly onto her hand.
Her brows snapped together, and she instantly yanked her hand away, shooting to her feet with a fierce scowl.
Caden scrambled up after her. He tilted his little chin up, staring at her with wide, innocent eyes. "Miss, your face is still super pale. Do you want me to get someone to take you to the doctor?"
"No," Hester replied, her face completely icy. She was still savoring the candy in her mouth, but the momentary softness in her heart had vanished without a trace.
This was Julian and Melody's child. He was the living, breathing proof of Julian's sickening betrayal against her and the twins she had lost. How could she possibly feel an ounce of softness for him?
Hester stared down at Caden and asked again, her voice bone-chillingly cold. "I'm going to ask you one more time. Have you ever seen me before today?"
Caden couldn't understand why the pretty lady was suddenly looking at him so fiercely. But she didn't seem like a bad person, and he still remembered the things his dad had told him...
So, he nodded with absolute honesty. "I saw your picture on my daddy's phone! In the picture, you were a lot curvier, and your tummy was super round! There was a cute little smiley face painted on your belly. And your hair was this... this long! And it was super curly. You looked just like a beautiful princess from a fairy tale!"
Caden practically glowed as he used his hands to gesture down to his waist.
Hester froze completely solid. If she remembered correctly, that exact description matched her maternity shoot.
