Broken Vows and Buried Twins novel Chapter 31

Hester didn't say a word. Even though Gael's words sounded absurd, Hester fully believed Julian was capable of pulling a stunt like that.

"So, what are you going to do now?" Gael asked.

"Look at it from another angle. Julian caring so much about Caden might actually be a good thing."

"A good thing?" Gael reached out and pressed the back of her hand against Hester's forehead. "You don't have a fever! What nonsense are you spouting?"

Hester's expression remained perfectly calm. "I mean, since Julian is so fiercely protective of Caden, he definitely won't let the boy suffer the slightest grievance."

Gael frowned, then her eyes lit up as realization dawned. "I get it! You can use Caden as leverage to force Julian to sign the divorce papers!"

"Exactly. And if he refuses to cooperate, I wouldn't mind letting the whole of Northwood City know that Caden is his illegitimate son." Hester gently rested a hand on her stomach. "I know the child is innocent, but Julian forced my hand."

"I'm glad you're thinking this way!" Gael said, then asked, "How long until Jasper Kane has the divorce agreement ready?"

"Should be in the next couple of days," Hester explained. "His daughter just moved back to the country and is still adjusting. He's juggling taking care of her with his casework, so I didn't want to rush him. Playing both mom and dad—that can't be easy for him."

...

Two days later, Jasper emailed Hester the draft of the divorce agreement.

After reviewing it, she called him to request a few minor amendments. Jasper mentioned he had some free time that afternoon and invited her to drop by his law firm to discuss it in person if she was available.

It was exactly what Hester had been hoping for. Conveniently, the results of the DNA test were also scheduled to be ready that afternoon.

...

At 2:00 PM, Hester drove up to Jasper's firm.

A junior assistant guided her to the door of Jasper's office and gave it a polite knock.
