Hester frowned, a complex wave of emotions washing over her. She looked at Caden. Even though the child had spoken up for her, he hadn't told the whole truth. Melody had lunged over abruptly. While it happened fast, Caden was old enough to know the difference between tripping and being shoved to the ground.
There was only one explanation. Caden knew Melody was the one who pushed him, and he was actively protecting her.
At that thought, a cold, mocking smile tugged at the corners of Hester's lips. She couldn't help but scoff internally: Melody truly has been his mother for five years.
Hester didn't say a word. She walked over to the dining table and sat in the seat opposite Bella and Caden.
In the past, the seats right next to Bella had always belonged to her and Julian. But now, Caden was occupying the spot beside the old woman.
Hester was someone who knew when to cut her losses. Once she realized a relationship had irreparably changed, she forced herself to sever those emotional ties as quickly as possible. She told herself to just endure it. Once Bella's surgery was successful, she would find the right time to give her a proper explanation and say her final goodbyes.
Having made her decision, Hester's mood actually settled into a strange calm.
Just as she sat down, Julian walked over to the table.
Bella looked at him, urging, “Julian, sit next to Hester. I'll keep Caden company on this side. You've always been terrible with words, but you completely misunderstood Hester this morning. You need to give her a proper apology right now!”
“There's no need.” Hester looked at Bella, her expression entirely placid. “It's in the past.”
Bella sighed, looking at Hester with pity. “You were wronged. How can we just let it go?”
Hester just wanted to finish her food quickly so she could retreat upstairs to rest. She decided to play along. “It was just a tiny misunderstanding. Julian already explained himself to me upstairs. As long as Caden is fine, that's all that matters.”
Hearing this, Bella turned to Julian. “Julian, did you really clear things up with Hester?”
