Hester stood up abruptly. She looked at Bella, forcing down the torrent of emotions churning inside her, and spoke in a flat tone. “Bella, I'm full. I'm going upstairs to rest.”
Without waiting for a response, Hester turned and walked straight toward the second floor.
Bella stared blankly at Hester's retreating back. It took her a long moment to process the sudden departure before she turned to Julian. “Julian, is Hester upset?”
Julian softly reassured the older woman. “Grandma, Hester had a lot to deal with at the company today. She's just exhausted.”
“Is that so?” Bella frowned. She glanced at Caden and muttered, “I just felt like her mood was completely off today.”
“She's just tired. Don't overthink it.”
Bella pondered this for a moment and nodded. “You're right. I've watched Hester grow up. She acts tough, but she has the softest heart. She could never bear to be angry with me! Still, Julian, we really did wrong her today with Caden's situation. As her husband, you absolutely must find a way to make it up to her and soothe her feelings.”
Julian nodded. “Grandma, Hester and I have been together for so many years. Don't worry, we know each other inside and out. She's just not used to having Caden around yet. Once they spend some time together, I'm sure she'll accept him.”
“Yes, exactly. Our Caden is so adorable, and Hester is such a kind-hearted lady. It's only a matter of time before she accepts and loves our boy.”
Bella looked down at Caden and gently patted his head, offering a reminder. “Caden, when you see her, you address her as Aunt Hester. You need to be polite to her and behave well. Try your best to make her accept you sooner, alright?”
