Hearing those words, the air completely vanished from Hester's lungs.
Jasper walked up, holding Gigi. He glanced down at Caden, then back up at Hester. "Kids this age often miscommunicate things. Don't take it to heart."
Hester took a deep breath and forced a bitter, hollow smile. "It doesn't matter. We're getting a divorce anyway."
Seeing her reaction, Jasper didn't press the issue.
Hester completely ignored Caden and walked straight to the reception desk. "Hello, I have an appointment with Dr. Coleman."
"Good morning, Mrs. Weston!" The receptionist's voice was bright, but her smile was painfully stiff. Her eyes kept darting nervously toward Dr. Coleman's office door.
She recognized Hester instantly. Whenever Julian had brought Hester in for holistic treatments in the past, she had been the one to check them in. Back then, she had been insanely jealous of Hester, convinced she had landed the ultimate catch. After all, Julian wasn't just wealthy and devastatingly handsome; he openly doted on his wife.
The receptionist could have never imagined that he was the kind of man who doted on his mistress just as much...
And the absolute worst part? He had brought his mistress in for fertility treatments, only to run smack into his actual wife. This was the ultimate, nightmare-level drama!
The poor receptionist was too young and inexperienced to handle this level of explosive tension, and she looked like she was about to have a panic attack on the spot.
But compared to the terrified receptionist, Hester—the actual victim in this scenario—was chillingly calm. She didn't even acknowledge Julian's presence in the building. Instead, she just said, "The girl has a slight fever."
"Oh, if it's a fever, we can definitely get her seen immediately! But, um, Mr. Weston is currently..." The young woman abruptly bit her tongue and quickly corrected herself, "Let me just run back and ask Dr. Coleman. Please wait a moment, Mrs. Weston..."
Before the receptionist could finish her sentence, the sharp click of a door handle echoed through the lobby.
Hester instinctively turned her head.
Julian stepped out of the office.
Hearing this, Hester's expression turned incredibly dark.
Julian merely patted Caden's head, his voice dropping to a dangerously low register. "Don't speak nonsense."
"I'm not talking nonsense! Mom is going to have a baby!"
"Mama isn't having a baby!" Gigi's sweet, protective voice suddenly pierced the tension.
Held securely in Jasper's arms, the gorgeous little girl scrunched up her nose, patted her own chest, and unleashed a rare, fiercely territorial glare. "My mama!"
Caden stared blankly at Gigi. After a long moment, he blinked, then tilted his head up and tugged gently on Julian's trousers. "Dad, why is that little girl calling the Pretty Lady 'Mommy'? Is she her daughter?"
Julian's brow pulled into a furious, deeply creased scowl as his lethal gaze locked onto Hester. "Hester, don't you think you owe me an explanation?"
