It all went down in just a few seconds. One moment everything was normal, and the next, chaos exploded out of nowhere.
I never saw it coming. To set me up, he actually let all those glasses crash down on himself. He put himself in harm’s way, just to turn everyone against me.
Before I could even catch my breath, Claire pushed her way through the crowd. She listened to the people around her, took one look at Garrison lying on the floor, and then came straight for me.
Without saying a word, she slapped me hard across the face.
She put her whole body into it. The crack of her palm echoed through the entire ballroom, and suddenly, the room went dead silent. Everyone could see how furious Claire was.
A few people whispered behind their hands. “Oh my God, isn’t that Claire’s fiancé on the floor?”
“She must really love him, to smack someone like that for his sake.”
Someone else recognized me. “Wait, I think Claire just hit Garrison’s brother.”
“I heard Claire and Lambert used to be together. This is one messy situation.”
The sting on my cheek snapped me back to reality. I stared at Claire, completely shocked.
She glared at me, her voice shaking with anger. “Lambert, what is wrong with you? Did you even think about what could have happened with all those glasses?”
Claire was so sure I’d pushed him. I tried to explain, desperate to make her believe me.
“I didn’t push him!”
“So what, Garrison just fell by himself?”
“That’s exactly what happened! He did it himself, I didn’t touch him!”
