I had no clue how she was doing. If it weren’t for Diana, her caregiver, I wouldn’t know a single thing. Every day, all I could do was call Darleen. I had no way of talking to the doctors or getting real updates about her condition.
“I have things to handle. I’m taking this week off,” I said.
Claire didn’t even look up. “You’re all by yourself. What could possibly be so important? I let the last incident slide, so don’t go looking for trouble.”
After that whole mess, I knew Halley and Alice had tried to convince Claire to fire me. To them, I was nothing but a burden, a threat to Garrison. They wanted me gone.
Garrison didn’t come out and say it, but he made his feelings clear. “Maybe it’s time to let Lambert go. I know he’s hurt you before and he’s never going to change. After everything that’s happened, having him around is dangerous. What if he snaps and hurts you next time?”
He was just trying to use the situation to push Claire into getting rid of me.
But Claire had her own reasons for keeping me close. She wanted me there, if only to make me pay. She wasn’t about to let me go so easily.
She just brushed them off. “It’s fine. You don’t need to worry. He still owes me for what he did, and this is just the beginning.”
Garrison realized she wasn’t going to change her mind, so he gave up.
Halley came to see me, acting like my job as Claire’s driver was beneath him.
“Quit. This job is embarrassing.”
I laughed. “What’s so embarrassing about working for a living? At least I earn my own way. Not like you, using my mom to climb up, taking over her inheritance, and then treating her like she was nothing.”
