Building Her Throne Burying My Heart (Claire) novel Chapter 52

She let out a low laugh with her head down. Just a moment later, she looked up at me.

Her eyes were red and shining with tears, her emotions all tangled up as she struggled to hold herself together. Her voice came out rough as she pulled a card from her purse and held it up.

“Fine. Great. I got the answer I wanted.”

“I’ll give you the money, but from now on, your life is mine.”

She tossed the card at my feet. “The PIN is six ones. Two million on it. Get your business handled. You have one week to cut her off completely.”

She threw the keys to Laird and brushed past me.

“From now on, whether you live or die is up to me. If you can’t end it with her, you’ll never get away from me.”

Claire didn’t look back. She just walked off, leaving those words hanging in the air.

The card landed softly by my shoes, but it felt impossibly heavy. I bent down to pick it up, my whole body feeling shaky and hollow.

I hadn’t slept in over a day. Barely ate, barely drank. Everything that had just happened left me wiped out, like I might drop to the floor any second.

Aaron saw me swaying and hurried over, holding me up. “Lambert, are you okay? If you’re feeling sick, let’s get you back to the hospital.”

I grabbed his arm to steady myself. “Take me back. I need to deliver this money now.”

Her eyes locked onto mine, her cheerful face turning suddenly serious, almost challenging.

I had no idea what was going on, but she got restless, pushing at me. “Lambert, answer me. Tell me now.”

I panicked and blurted out, “Yes. Yes, I’ll love you forever. Always.”

But in the next moment, her face twisted with anger.

“No. You won’t. You’re a liar.”

She pulled out a knife and drove it straight into my chest.
