Building Her Throne Burying My Heart (Claire) novel Chapter 67

Garrison didn’t say anything else. He just closed his eyes, pretending to sleep, not wanting to make things any more obvious. This time, Lambert probably wouldn’t be as lucky as before. On roads like these, a crash almost always meant disaster. Even if he survived, the car would be destroyed, burned up, and any trace of what happened would disappear.

That thought gave Garrison a strange sense of satisfaction.

Claire stayed with him the whole night. When the sun came up, Garrison finally looked a little better.

“We should head down the mountain. You need to take some medicine for your cold.”

“Alright. Let’s go. I’ll have Laird pick us up.”

Claire called Laird, and he set off right away. On his way up, he noticed a big crowd by the roadside, along with some rescue vehicles. But Claire kept urging him to hurry, so he barely glanced at the scene before driving past.

When he picked them up and they started down the mountain, the crowd had grown and completely blocked the road. Laird had no choice but to stop the car.

Rescue vehicles were everywhere, taking up almost the whole road. They seemed to be pulling something—or someone—from the ravine below.

Claire tapped her fingers on the window, impatient. “What’s going on up there?”

“No idea,” Laird replied.

“Well, go find out. We can’t just sit here all day. Why are they blocking everything?”

As they waited, Garrison’s hands started to sweat. He was more nervous about Lambert’s fate than his own. He stared ahead, watching as Laird walked into the crowd to get some answers.

Not knowing the truth made Claire even more anxious, clinging to the little bit of hope she still had.

“If you don’t know, then go find out! Get the details and come back. Tell me everything,” she snapped, her patience running out. Laird could tell she was totally on edge.

“Alright, I’ll go ask. Just stay in the car, okay? It’s muddy out here.”

Laird disappeared into the crowd again, and Garrison grew more restless.

“Claire, this really doesn’t have anything to do with us. Let’s just leave it. I feel terrible. I just want to get down the mountain.”

He threw in a cough for good measure, but Claire barely noticed. Part of her hoped that the person who crashed was Lambert, just so she’d know he hadn’t lied. But another part of her was terrified it really was him, because the thought of him getting hurt still tore at her heart. No matter how hard she tried to protect herself, seeing Lambert again had left her tangled in feelings she couldn’t control.
