Building Her Throne Burying My Heart (Claire) novel Chapter 96

Alice said she was taking me out for some fun, but she purposely left me behind at the amusement park, hoping someone would take me. Back then, Alice had just found out she was pregnant. Halley looked for me for a little while, but when he couldn’t find me, he gave up. After that, nobody ever came looking. No one cared if I lived or died. Forget about having a proper upbringing. Surviving at all felt like some kind of miracle.

Halley’s face twisted with anger and he lifted his hand, ready to hit me. Before he could do anything, Claire’s voice broke through.

“Halley, what do you think you’re doing?”

Halley stiffened and dropped his hand, his expression turning icy. “I was just trying to teach this ungrateful kid a lesson.”

Claire shot me a look. “He’s at work. He’s my employee right now.”

She turned back to Halley, her voice calm but firm. “This isn’t the time or place. If you want to talk to him, pick another time.”

Halley opened his mouth but nothing came out. He looked like he was going to explode, but he couldn’t risk making trouble with Claire. The Gates family was not someone he could afford to mess with anymore.

When he stayed silent, Claire said, “If there’s nothing else, I need to have a word with my employee.”

Halley finally stepped back, his face dark and sour. “Fine. I won’t bother you. I have other things to do.” He glared at me one last time, then stormed off.

As soon as he was gone, Claire’s eyes turned cold as she looked at me.

“Are you just here to make trouble for me?”

I handed her purse back. “If you’re done with me, I’ll just go. My clothes are soaked and if I stick around, I’ll only embarrass you more.”

She glanced at my shirt, stained with red wine. The mess was obvious.

“Pathetic. My own employee getting bullied like that. How shameful.”
