Everyone at the table was staring. Halley’s face looked a little pale.
Why would Claire ask him for money? Was she really in trouble, or was this some kind of test? In business, things changed fast. One day you were up, the next you could lose everything. Halley had planned to use the Gates Group to his own advantage, but now, before he’d even gotten anything out of it, he was being asked to give something up.
Halley prided himself on being shrewd, but this caught him off guard.
Still, what if Claire really was testing him? He’d met her a few times before, and she was sharper and more careful than most people. If this was a test, and he actually gave her the money, she probably wouldn’t even accept it.
So, Halley put on a generous smile. “When did this happen? Just tell me what you need. How can I help?”
Claire hadn’t expected him to actually agree. She hesitated for a moment, a little surprised. “It’s something that happened not long ago. I haven’t even had time to tell Garrison. If you could help, it would mean a lot.”
“I need about ninety million. I know it’s a lot. Is that possible right now?”
Ninety million. Halley’s heart skipped a beat. That was a huge number. She was asking him, right here, face to face. Was he supposed to just hand it over? They weren’t even engaged yet. If he gave her the money, what if she never paid him back?
Halley’s mouth twitched. “That’s quite a sum. I’ll have to check with my assistant, see if we have that much cash available.”
Claire looked disappointed. “I see. Maybe I’ll try to find another way, then. This is kind of urgent.”
“If I can’t fix this in time, I probably won’t have the energy to deal with wedding plans, either.”
Alice shot Halley a worried look but didn’t dare say anything. Garrison finally spoke up. “Claire, don’t worry. I’m sure my dad can figure something out.”
Halley clenched his fist under the table, struggling to keep his cool. After a moment, he forced himself to speak. “I’ll ask when I get back. I just started a big project myself, so… I don’t know if I can help.”
That was all Claire needed to hear. He had made his decision.
“It’s alright. It’s just a temporary problem. I’ll handle it, even if it means postponing the wedding.”
