The truth was, Denton was also a kid who grew up without love. Since he was little, Michael was irresponsible. His mom didn’t really care. They were both lazy and selfish. From the moment Denton could walk, he knew he had to go from house to house for food, or he’d go hungry.

Denton smiled brightly and nodded. “Okay.”

He looked through the menu for a long time, trying to find something that cost less than 300 dollars. But even the simplest dish was over 380 dollars.

Curtis noticed how uneasy Denton was. He lifted his hand and called the waiter. “We’ll have the house specialties,” he said calmly.

The waiter nodded politely and asked, “Certainly. Do either of you have any allergies?”

“Nothing with scaleless fish,” Curtis and Denton replied at the same time.

Denton had grown up in a small fishing village by the sea. As a child, he had a severe allergy to deep–sea scaleless fish, high protein reactions that nearly stopped his breathing. Even though he got better as he grew, he still avoided it carefully.

The waiter smiled warmly. “You really are brothers; not only do you look alike, but even your allergies match.”

Curtis’s face darkened even more. The waiter was talking too much.

Denton didn’t say anything. He sat quietly, staring at his hands, nervously picking at his fingers. He didn’t even dare touch his phone.

He admired Curtis. And because he respected him, Denton feared him.

Curtis noticed his discomfort and spoke first, “Is he good to you?”

Denton wanted to complain. He wanted to tell Curtis about his suffering. But after a pause, he simply shook his head and said, “He’s okay. At least he didn’t abandon me.”

Curtis let out a sneer in disdain. “He dragged you to a place like that. Where else could he run?”

Denton lowered his head even more. His voice was soft. “Can’t you and Dad ever make peace?”

Curtis asked him grimly, “You think a blood debt can be forgiven?”

Denton froze. He looked up at Curtis. “I never really knew what happened. Nobody tells me anything. Can you tell me?”

He was curious. Denton asked Michael before, but Michael always exploded in anger and never told him the truth. His mother knew even less. Nobody ever gave him real answers.

Curtis’s fingers tapped the table slowly. He reached for a cigarette, held it between his lips, and lit it.

He looked at Denton. “You smoke?”

Denton shook his head quickly.

He barely had enough money to graduate high school. How could he afford to smoke?

Even if he wanted to learn, he couldn’t afford that habit.

Curtis nodded. He respected that. Curtis had tried to quit for Adriana. He was getting better. But talking about the past, he needed a cigarette to calm himself down. Otherwise, he was afraid his anger would spill over and hurt someone who didn’t deserve it.

“Your dad and the woman who gave birth to me were a reunion of marriage alliance,” Curtis
