Adriana rolled her eyes. “This house is mine. It has nothing to do with Curtis or the Lincolns.”

Savannah looked incredulous, then quickly figured it out. “Adriana, you’re an orphan. Where would you get the money to buy a villa like this? Do you even know how much this place costs? Even if it’s yours, Curtis must’ve paid for it. And his money belongs to the Lincolns. Got it?”

“Even if his money belongs to the Lincolns, it has nothing to do with you, right? Your dad is just the Lincolns‘ butler. That doesn’t make him the owner,” Adriana said, finding Savannah ridiculous.

“What do you mean by that? My dad has devoted decades to the Lincolns. Mr. Harold personally groomed me as his successor. The Lincolns are our family. I have the right to protect every last cent Mr. Harold left behind,” Savannah started again.

Adriana thought Savannah had serious issues. The Lincolns treated her too well and spoiled her into this.

She almost wished Yolanda were here. If Yolanda were around, she’d probably be roasting Savannah in a hundred creative ways by now.

“I already told Denton to come over for dinner tonight. When’s Curtis getting here?” Savannah walked straight into the kitchen without any sense of boundaries, grabbed a drink from the fridge, and drank it while complaining. “Why do you like this brand of coconut water? It tastes awful. You should get Curtis that other brand instead. It’s expensive, but it’s premium.”

Adriana honestly thought Savannah was unwell. “Let’s reschedule dinner. I’m cooking at home tonight. It probably won’t suit your tastes.”

Adriana was forcing herself to stay calm. If she didn’t want to find out who was backing Savannah, she would’ve kicked her out already.

She even started considering reporting to the community office and getting a big dog. Next time these random people showed up, she’d shut the door and let the dog out.

Savannah glanced at Adriana and nodded. “You’re at least a decent housewife. I’ll give you that.”

That judgmental tone made Adriana want to punch her. “I already told Denton. We’ll just make do with your cooking tonight. Go light on the salt. Keep it light.”

Adriana took a deep breath and went into the kitchen to stew in silence.

Savannah acted like a supervisor Harold had deliberately left behind. It was infuriating.

Still, Adriana was curious. Why had the person behind the scenes, who had been trying so hard to drive a wedge between Curtis and Denton before, suddenly switched tactics and had Savannah pushing to repair their relationship?

She had no idea what kind of scheme that person was cooking up.

“You and Curtis don’t have kids. Curtis and Denton are the closest people to each other. They’re blood–related. You’re ultimately just an outsider. Understand?” Savannah stood at the kitchen door, lecturing Adriana. “To put it bluntly, if Curtis’s inheritance ever needs to be passed on, Denton would be first in line.”

Adriana’s hand paused mid–chop.

Now she understood Savannah’s angle. The person behind her shifted focus to Curtis’s inheritance?

She instinctively glanced at her stomach and took a deep breath. No wonder Curtis keeps insisting I keep the pregnancy secret.

But hearing Savannah say this still made Adriana’s back

She was worried that the person behind all this would make another move against Curtis.

“You’re just an orphan. You wouldn’t fight Denton over inheritance, right? You should know, if something happens to Curtis, handing over what already belongs to Denton is the only way you’ll get his protection later. Otherwise, you might get the money, but you might not live long enough to spend it,” Savannah said pointedly, deliberately threatening her.

The implication was obvious. She seemed convinced Curtis would definitely meet an untimely end.

Adriana’s eyelid twitched. She hated anyone speaking ill of Curtis. Unable to take it anymore, she slammed the cleaver down onto the cutting board.

Savannah jumped. “What are you doing?”

Adriana held the cleaver and pointed it at Savannah. “Keep running your mouth like that, and my knife will be the first thing that hits you.”

Savannah froze. She clearly hadn’t expected Adriana to snap like this. She swallowed and finally shut up.

Savannah had completely ruined Adriana’s mood. She finished cooking and set the dishes on the table, but her mind was elsewhere the whole time.

Denton arrived before Curtis. He was clearly much more polite than Savannah. He brought gifts and even asked Adriana where he should leave his coat.

“You didn’t even take your jacket off?” Denton asked when he saw Savannah still wearing hers.

“Maybe she just has no manners,” Adriana said with a tight smile.

Savannah’s expression stiffened. “This is Curtis’s house. It might be Denton’s in the future. Why make such a fuss?”

“Are you unable to understand basic language, or are you hard of hearing? I’ve already said this house is mine. My name is on the deed. Do you understand now?” Adriana said coldly.

Savannah was about to argue again when Denton quickly stepped in to ease the tension. “Adriana, I brought watermelon. It’s super sweet. Let’s put it in the fridge to chill first and try it later.”
