She messed up once. That was all it took. She got infected, and Savannah’s people got the proof. Now she was stuck. They owned her.

Haldoria Hospital.

Curtis stayed close to Adriana as she went through her prenatal checkup. His phone wouldn’t stop ringing. It was Langford Group again. Raymond was clearly getting anxious. He wanted the partnership signed so the project money could go through.

Curtis didn’t mind taking his time. Mr. Langford clearly did.

“Hello, Mr. Langford. I’m with my wife at her appointment. Is it urgent?” Curtis asked, voice cool and steady.

“Curtis, of course. That comes first. When you’re done, just swing by the office. We’ll talk over the deal. I’ve already held a board meeting and handed full control and the shares over to Matthew,” Raymond said cheerfully, like he was just letting Curtis know.

Matthew now ran Langford Group. That meant it was time to make good on their promise and transfer the funds.

“If you’re ready to move, Mr. Langford, I won’t hold things up. Once we’re done here and everything looks fine, we’ll sign tomorrow,” Curtis said with a cold smile.

“Alright, alright, Curtis. Go do what you need to do.” Raymond looked like he could finally breathe again. That weight crushing his chest had finally come off.

As long as he got Curtis to cough up the money, his job was done.

“Adriana.” The nurse called her name and motioned her into the ultrasound room. Curtis, as the father, followed her inside to listen for the heartbeat and check on the embryo.

Adriana walked in without much tension. She seemed composed. Curtis, on the other hand, looked like he was holding his breath.

He squeezed her hand and locked his eyes on the screen.

“Do you remember the doctor talking about the possibility of two sacs last time?” the nurse asked, smiling. “Well, it’s confirmed now. You’re having twins. Both look healthy and strong.”

Curtis looked stunned too. But right behind his joy, a shadow of concern started to show.

He wanted to stay close to Adriana through every second, right until the babies were safely delivered. The more he cared, the more pressure he felt to hurry everything up.

“Will twins be hard on her?” Curtis asked, looking straight at the doctor.

He was focused on Adriana’s well–being more than anything.

“There is some risk,” the doctor replied, “but your wife’s young and healthy. You’ve got nothing to worry about. These days, twin pregnancies are pretty common.”

Adriana gave a small nod, her eyes turning glassy.

Two babies. It felt like a second chance after the last one she lost.

Maybe that baby had never left her at all. Maybe they’d come back … and brought a sibling this time.

“Curtis, I can’t wait for the day they both come into the world, safe and sound.” Her voice cracked a little as they walked out.

Curtis pulled her in tight. “You’re going to be fine. The babies will too.”

They left the hospital together. Just as they reached the car, a man in a baseball cap lunged out of nowhere with a knife.

Adriana saw the blade flash. Her instincts kicked in. She yanked Curtis back and landed a solid kick to the guy’s arm.

All those self–defense lessons with Yolanda had paid off. If not for that, she would’ve frozen up.

The blade flew out of his hand and clattered on the ground. Curtis and the driver tackled the man instantly, slamming him down.

Curtis glanced at the camera above. His voice was cold. “Take him. I want to know who sent him.”

Adriana’s hands didn’t stop shaking. Even after they got home, her heart wouldn’t slow down.

Whoever was behind this wasn’t hiding anymore. They were getting bold.

“Dad, it’s time to put it in writing. The shares. The control. Everything.” Matthew’s voice was flat.

Raymond’s face tightened. “You’re that eager to take over?”

“Dad, we’re family, but business is still business. If we’re putting on a show, we can’t just half- ass it. Curtis isn’t some fool. He already agreed to show up tomorrow and move forward. He can tolerate you messing with him once. Twice if you’re really lucky. But if he really gets pissed…” Matthew locked eyes with Raymond, his voice cool and sharp.

Rex jumped in, his tone frantic. “So that’s it? You can’t wait to get all the shares for yourself? What kind of game are you playing? You’re Dad’s son. Curtis would believe you if you just told him the shares were yours and everything’s already in motion. What difference does it make? You’re just looking for a way to bail.”

Matthew gave a dry laugh. “Curtis isn’t an idiot. You had someone hit him with a car and survived his wrath not because you got lucky. He didn’t kill you because I stepped in and saved your neck.”

Rex opened his mouth, ready to snap back, but Raymond raised a hand and shut him up.
