Raymond frowned, his brow tightening. He started to speak, but the door slammed open with a loud crash. Curtis walked in with his assistant, dragging a bloodied man by the arm.

The guy’s face was swollen and bruised purple. He hit the floor with a sickening thud. When he looked up

and spotted Rex, fear rushed through his eyes. Rex’s face went ghost pale.

Matthew’s eyes narrowed. One look and he knew. Rex had screwed up again.

He almost laughed. Rex was basically a gift–wrapped present for the enemy.

Matthew smirked and leaned back in his seat like he was at a show.

Raymond’s face shifted. He stood quickly. “Curtis, what is going on?”

Curtis didn’t even blink. He stared straight at Rex. His voice dropped low. “Why don’t you ask your golden boy?”

The man on the floor shook, then pointed. “It was him. He told me to kill Curtis.”

“No… no, I didn’t!” Rex yelled, voice cracking.

Matthew snorted. He couldn’t believe his father still treated this idiot like he was worth something.

Raymond looked shaken. He turned to Curtis, struggling to stay calm. “There’s got to be some mix–up here, Curtis. This isn’t what it looks like.”

Curtis exhaled slowly, his breath heavy with contempt. “A mix–up? Fine. Then let’s pause this deal until your company figures out what’s really going on.” He nodded to his assistant, who let the guy go. Curtis turned and walked out without another word.

The silence felt like a heavy curtain. Then came the crack of a slap. Raymond’s hand struck Rex hard across the face.

Rex held his cheek and looked stunned. Sure, he’d been thinking about getting rid of Curtis, but he didn’t know the man on the floor at all.

The attacker scrambled to his feet and bolted out of the room.

“Dad, please. You’ve got to believe me. That guy’s not mine. I haven’t even sent my people out yet-” Another slap hit before he could finish.

Rex had another brilliant idea of assassination. He’d send his men to take Curtis out and ruin the whole thing.

Raymond’s face was dark with rage. “How many times have I told you? This deal is everything. Everything! We need to get the money from Curtis first. And you? You ruin everything you touch. Get out. Don’t show your face here again unless I tell you to.”

Rex clenched his fists tight, his eyes locked on Matthew. “It was you, wasn’t it? You planned this. That guy was your setup, wasn’t he?”

Matthew didn’t flinch. “Dad, I think he’s lost his damn mind.”

He raised one brow and drew in a breath. So Curtis had already predicted that Rex would pull something this stupid. That guy didn’t play games. When he decided to act, it was cold and ruthless. It chilled Matthew right down to the bone.

“Out!” Raymond snapped. Rex stormed off, furious but helpless.

Once he was gone, Mr. Langford dropped into the seat across from Matthew. “I called Curtis today. He said he was with his wife for a prenatal checkup. Looks like she’s pregnant.”

Just like that, the wheels in his head started spinning again.

“Curtis never leaves loose ends. He kept his wife’s pregnancy quiet because he knew that as long as Harold was alive, someone might come after the baby. But now the pregnancy’s far enough along, there’s no hiding it anymore. So he told you himself. Any idea why?” Matthew looked straight at Raymond, his smile cold and sharp.

Raymond didn’t answer. His face darkened.

Curtis had made his point clear. If anything happened to Adriana or the baby, no matter who was behind it, he would hold Raymond and the Langford Group responsible.

Curtis might’ve stepped back from Lincoln Group, but he still had the power to bring Langford Group down with him.

Raymond let out a slow breath. The tension in his jaw cased, just a little. He gave up on the idea of using Adriana. “Fine. I’ll hand over the shares and give you full control of the group right now. Go talk to Curtis. Get him to calm down. Get that deal locked in. I’m done waiting.” He wasn’t the one who couldn’t wait. Someone behind him was already pushing hard.

“Dad, I’ve got a question,” Matthew said quietly. “Even if Curtis came back swinging, it’d hurt the Langford Group, sure, but not enough to make you do something this reckless. Who’s behind you? Who’s got you so scared you’d try to steal his inheritance and turn on him like

Matthew didn’t ask again. He knew he wouldn’t get the truth.
