It was time to rethink everything. Even with full control of Langford Group, he’d still have to tear it down and build it back up from the inside.
In a narrow alley not far from Langford Group…
The guy who had faked the hit on Curtis slipped into the shadows and glanced around. When he saw Kenneth, he gave a smug grin. “Not bad, huh? I really sold it.”
Kenneth handed him the envelope of cash. “Take the money. Go dark.”
The guy took it fast and rubbed his wrist. “That woman hits like a truck. Her kick nearly snapped my arm.”
Kenneth looked tired. “Save the whining. If Rex’s men find you, you’re dead. Get moving.”
The man nodded, clutched the envelope, and vanished down the alley.
Kenneth turned back and walked to Curtis. “Mr. Lincoln, Rex really did hire someone to take you out. We caught it in time. We took over the job.”
That setup alone was enough to make Raymond cave.
Once Matthew had full control, he’d finally be able to protect Adriana.
That was always Curtis‘ goal.
And now, everything was unfolding exactly as he’d planned.
“Stick to the original plan,” Curtis said, his voice low.
Kenneth hesitated before he spoke again. “You should stay close to your wife for a while. She’s pregnant. She can’t afford this kind of stress.”
Curtis gave a small nod. His eyes carried a quiet ache, something heavy that words couldn’t touch.
From the day he was born, he never knew what real family felt like. No warmth. No love. Just cold distance. He had fought alone his entire life. And now, when he finally had something good–a home, a wife he loved, a child on the way–he couldn’t even give them peace.

“People always talk about how lucky the Lincolns are. Richest family in Harborton. Top of the food chain.” On the ride back, Curtis stared out the window and let out a bitter laugh.
If he had a choice, he’d trade it all. He’d rather grow up in a regular home. No money, no pressure. Just real happiness.
But being born a Lincoln meant one thing–he’d been used from day one.
And honestly, if he really let himself think about it, he figured the game had started long before he was even born.
The Lincolns. The Bartons. The Harrisons. The Gills. Every one of them had bled for this power play. No one ever walked away clean.
Now that Harold was gone, the old plans were crawling out from the past like poison. Whoever was behind it wanted Curtis dead. They wanted Denton turned into a puppet. They wanted every last dime the Lincolns owned.
The Bartons were hanging by a thread. Jeremy was still trying to hold it together. Adriana was the rightful heir, but she couldn’t go public. Wouldn’t dare. That left everything crashing down on Justin’s back.
Curtis had kept Adriana too safe. Even after Jeremy passed and her name was revealed, Justin still didn’t think she could carry the weight.
The Harrisons started breaking the moment their daughter married into the Lincolns. When Gary stepped in, he kept things steady, but just barely. Their business survived, but the fire was gone. Like they’d run out of future.
The Gills looked fine from the outside. Untouched. But no one was safe. Not really.
Who was the one pulling the strings?
Who had that kind of reach? Enough to twist four powerful families around their finger and keep the entire corporate world dancing?
Curtis’s house.
By the time he walked through the door, the smell of dinner filled the air.
Adriana seemed gentle on the surface, but inside she was tough. Stubborn. She only felt safe when Curtis was near. That’s why she always tried so hard to build something real with him.
Her whole world had been shaped by the lack of love. So when she finally cared about someone, she gave them everything. But love like that came with fear. The more she cared, the

“Baby!” As soon as she saw him, Adriana dropped the utensils and ran over to hug him tight.
Curtis hugged her back, but his eyes held something uneasy. Maybe Justin had been right. Maybe protecting her so much had only slowed her down.
If she was going to take back the Bartons, then she had to step up. She had to learn how to fight.
“Adriana…” Curtis opened his mouth, then stopped.
Adriana looked up at him. Her chest felt tight.
She’d been sensing something for days. But she was too scared to face it. Denial had become her only shield.
“Is something going on?” Her voice came out small, but she forced the words out.
“You know someone’s been gunning for the Lincolns,” Curtis said. “Back when Harold lost it and handed the Lincoln Group shares to Denton, he basically handed him a loaded gun with his name on it.” He took her hand and walked her to the dining table.
Adriana paused. Lily popped into her mind. Someone had targeted Denton.
“I’m no different,” Curtis said. “Everything Harold built fell into my lap. But I’ve got no power behind it. That kind of money, sitting in my hands? It’s like holding a live grenade. They don’t want me to build something of my own. They just want to wait me out. And if I don’t use that money … if something happens to me… that fortune becomes a death sentence for you and the baby.”
