Yolanda nodded. She pulled in a sharp breath. These snakes were bad news. Nothing good ever came from people like that.

“Adriana!” Class was just about to start when Denton picked up a call. He stood up so fast his chair scraped the floor. His face went pale. “It’s… This is bad…”

His voice cracked. His whole body trembled. His eyes shimmered like tears were about to fall.

The pen slipped from his hand and clattered against the floor. The sharp clink shattered the silence.

Adriana’s stomach dropped. The dread she’d been carrying slammed into her chest.

“Don’t just stammer! What happened?” Yolanda jumped in, heart racing.

Denton’s face turned ghostly white. His chest heaved as he tried to keep it together. “It’s … Curtis. Something happened to him.”

He didn’t wait. He spun around and ran out the door.

Adriana took a sharp breath and swayed, barely catching herself before stepping out.

Yolanda jumped to her feet and hurried after her, too worried to sit still.

Savannah stayed seated, calm and collected. A smirk tugged at her lips.

Everything had gone exactly the way she wanted.

Curtis was dead.

She glanced at her manicured nails and let out a quiet laugh she couldn’t hold in.

The room spun. Before she even saw Curtis’s body, her vision went black, and her knees buckled. Her body hit the floor with a thud.

Curtis had been in a car crash.

After signing the deal with Langford Group, he left their office and was headed for Ainsworth Group. A wreck on the main highway had blocked traffic. His driver had to detour through the outer loop.

There were more trucks out there. Curtis‘ car ended up behind a semi. A car from behind lost its brakes and rammed into them, crushing his car between both ends.

When police and fire crews showed up, the car had been completely destroyed. The driver made it out with some cuts and bruises. Curtis had been in the back seat. The impact crushed him. The hospital tried to revive him, but he died on the table.

Now Denton was the last one left in the Lincoln family. Adriana was in no state to handle any of it. She was Curtis‘ wife, but she couldn’t bring herself to deal with the funeral. So Denton and Kenneth stepped in and kept things moving through the grief.

When Adriana finally woke up in her hospital bed, Kenneth had just stepped into the room.

Her eyes were red and swollen as she stared at him, searching his hands. She thought he might bring lilies. Something. Anything.

He didn’t bring a thing. Something sharp lodged itself in her chest. She couldn’t breathe right.

“The Lincoln elders want to bring Mr. Lincoln back to Harborton … to bury him there. But since you’re his wife, this is your decision,” Kenneth said quietly, eyes down.
