Chapter 309 The Sign

Curtis wasn’t truly gone. She could feel it. Deep down, she knew.
“Everything will fall into place,” Kenneth said, his voice quiet but loaded.
Adriana nodded through her tears.
Kenneth bowed his head and stepped aside without drawing attention.
Adriana eased back into her seat and held Curtis’s portrait close to her chest.

She was beginning to piece it together. The ones scheming against the Lincolns had never shown their faces. With Curtis alive and out in the open, they stayed hidden. But now that he’d faked his death and gone silent too, they’d be forced into the light.
Sure enough, the second Curtis “died,” Savannah and Danielle didn’t even bother keeping up
appearances.
Adriana inhaled and let the silence swallow her.
The days ahead were going to be brutal. One after another, they’d come for her. Relentless. Obsessive. Desperate to prove Curtis was really dead.
Back then, she thought she’d burned every bridge with the Langfords and the Joneses over Mia and Rufus.
Now, it was obvious. They weren’t about to waste this opportunity.
But that was fine. She wasn’t that same girl anymore.
Did they really think she’d sink back to the level where anyone could tear her apart?
“Savannah, Natasha, and Danielle are probably plotting already, Adriana. Those three are pit vipers,” Yolanda said, worry clouding her voice.
”
“They can come whenever they want,” Adriana rasped. She took off her sunglasses. Her eyes were hard, like steel.
She used to be alone. No one to lean on. No safety net. She let them walk all over her because she was scared the orphanage would suffer if she fought back.
But Curtis had already erased that weakness for her.

Like something inside her had snapped.

The Adriana from before had been like a quiet little rabbit hiding under Curtis’s wing. But the woman sitting in front of her now… This was someone who had shed the disguise.
She had never been soft.
She was a product of survival. A girl who grew up with nothing and fought for everything.
She only played the sweet role because Curtis had wanted it. And she’d been willing to be that girl for him. That was the only reason.
Langford Group.
After Curtis‘ “accident,” the company was in chaos. Rex was pulling every underhanded move he could think of to fight Matthew for the shares.
Meanwhile, Matthew locked all of Curtis’s project funds in his personal account. He claimed the project had gone off the rails and shut it down on his own.
Now, that money sat frozen. Unless Curtis came back to claim it himself or Matthew stepped up to help Adriana get access, no one could move a dime.
“Matthew, are you seriously trying to steal that money? You might get it into your account, but you won’t live long enough to enjoy a cent of it. Move the funds to the offshore account. That’s what we agreed to!” Raymond burst into the office, furious.
He really thought Matthew had lost his mind. The kid was actually starting to go rogue.
“The project’s falling apart. I can’t move the money that easily. Curtis is already dead, but I still have to answer to my partners,” Matthew said, calm as ever.
Raymond clenched his jaw. “Curtis is dead. So what if the project’s falling apart? Just wire the money. Get it done. Now.”
He was barely holding it together. He knew he couldn’t keep the money himself. But if Matthew held onto it, the entire Langford family would get dragged into hell with him.
Matthew was doing it on purpose.
“Dad, if we leave the money in my account and lay low for a while, we can start over. It’s not a

loss. Adriana’s just a clueless girl. She’s not gonna come after us,” Matthew said with intention, watching Raymond closely.
Raymond’s whole face tightened.
He stared at Matthew like he’d just slapped him. “That money can’t stay. I’m serious. Wire it out now. If you don’t, you’ll destroy this family.”
“I don’t get it. Curtis is gone. Even if we keep the money, who’s going to find out? What the hell are you so scared of?” Matthew asked, acting like he didn’t know.
Raymond’s expression changed. His hesitation said everything.
“If you don’t want to tell me the truth, fine.” Matthew leaned back in his chair, completely unmoved. He wasn’t letting that money go.
“You don’t need to know the truth. Just know this. Someone’s been working behind the scenes for years, taking down the Lincolns, the Bartons, all of them. And that person? We can’t mess with them. You need to stop gambling with the family’s future. Move the money. Don’t ask questions,” Raymond said again.
“You’re scared of him. I’m not. If he’s so powerful, why’s he hiding like a coward?” Matthew said without flinching.
Raymond’s face twisted with rage. He pointed at Matthew. “If you insist on keeping that money, then hand over your shares and your authority. Leave the family for good!”
