Silvercrest Avenue, Eldoria City. A black Maybach was parked under a dim streetlight, its body beginning to rock unnaturally.
With every jolt of the car, Natalie Verdan felt her heart being crushed.
Inside were her husband, Darren Cross, and his sister-in-law, Marie Ward.
Natalie felt as if she’d been struck by lightning, a paralyzing pain shooting through every fiber of her being.
Today was her fifth wedding anniversary with Darren. She had prepared a special dinner, a table full of his favorite dishes.
During the meal, her fork had clattered to the floor. As she bent to pick it up, she caught a glimpse of a pair of red high heels brushing against her husband’s leg.
They vanished in an instant, and at the time, she’d convinced herself she had imagined it.
After all, he was her husband, and Marie was his brother’s widow. A sister-in-law.
They would never do something so inappropriate.
It must have been a trick of the light, the vibrant red of the shoes playing with her eyes.
But now, the rhythmic rocking of the car was a cruel mockery of her self-deception.
Some people say you don't mess around in your own backyard, yet here he was, cheating with his own sister-in-law.
Darren. After all this time, she had never managed to win his heart.
Natalie fought to control her trembling hands, forcing back the tears until her eyes were bloodshot. His words echoed in her ears, a relentless chorus of past manipulations.
“Natalie, you can’t be rude to Marie. Even though my brother is gone, Marie is still the lady of this house.”
“Natalie, Marie prefers milder food. Look at this meal—it’s so spicy. How is she supposed to eat it?”
“Natalie, Marie was the one who helped me after my brother passed away. Without her family’s support, the Cross Group would have never survived the crisis. You wouldn’t be able to live so comfortably as a wealthy housewife. You must always respect her, always be grateful.”
Grateful? Respectful?
He had been shamelessly gaslighting her all along, and she had been completely blind to it.
She was the world’s biggest fool.
Her hands shook uncontrollably. She wanted to storm over there and rip the masks off their deceitful faces, but she knew that even if she did, Darren would only protect Marie.
