“Darren, we’re having a baby. He looks just like you. I love him so much. Do you love him, Darren?”
The past washed over her like a tidal wave.
Natalie choked on a bite of cake, coughing violently until tears streamed down her face.
He was the Darren who had dazzled her throughout her school years, the man who had been the sun in her sky.
When had he become so tainted, so rotten?
Everyone always said he was a man of integrity, someone who kept his distance from women, who didn't even have a female secretary.
So how could he have gotten involved with his widowed sister-in-law?
He disgusted her.
What had their five years of marriage even meant?
Suddenly, all the lights in the house flickered on.
The blinding glare made her feel even more exposed and pathetic in her broken state.
Her mother-in-law, Victoria Cross, raised an eyebrow, sneering down at Natalie. “If no one’s eating the cake, just throw it out. There’s no need to sit here stuffing your face in the middle of the night just to avoid waste.”
Natalie remained silent, which only fueled Victoria’s disdain. “You can take the girl out of the country, but you can’t take the country out of the girl. Five years in the Cross family, and you still reek of poverty.”
Natalie was used to Victoria’s constant stream of insults.
From the day she had married into the Cross family, she had treated her mother-in-law with sincerity and served her diligently, but Victoria had never accepted her, all because of her humble background.
So much for winning someone over with kindness. It was all just a joke.
Just then, the old butler spoke in a low voice. “Madam, the car is ready. Is everything alright with master Darren and lady Marie? Why were they taken to the police station in the middle of the night?”
So, she knew.
She knew about Darren and Marie’s affair but chose to conceal it, to enable it.
Lately, Marie’s parents had been pushing her to go on dates. Natalie had once overheard Victoria telling Darren he had to keep Marie in the family, that he couldn't let her remarry.
The Ward family’s son was useless, which meant all their assets would eventually go to Marie. They couldn’t let her marry out of the family.
So their solution was for Darren to keep Marie close, to keep her tied to the Cross family no matter the cost?
They were all utterly disgusting.
Natalie pulled out her phone and began the application process for passports for herself and her son.
She had to get him out of this toxic place.

Time for Marie to get her end, this has gone on way too long, time to move on. It’s getting boring....
Payback time. Waiting for chapters 321 onwards!...
I love the sarcastic comebacks. Quite amusing!...
