“You just don’t get it. The Fairchild Conglomerate is way richer than the Cross Group. And sure, Old Mr. Fairchild is old, but that’s the whole point. When he kicks the bucket, she’ll inherit a fortune. It’s different with Darren; Natalie wouldn’t have gotten a cent from the Cross family.”
“I heard she walked away with nothing from the divorce. Must have signed a prenup.”
“A woman with her kind of background would have to sign a prenup to marry into a family like that. Since she couldn’t get any money, she might as well throw herself into Old Mr. Fairchild’s arms. I heard the villa where they were photographed is worth two hundred million. Old Mr. Fairchild just gave it to her. Who wouldn’t love a sugar daddy like that?”
The internet was ablaze with rumors. Although Old Mr. Fairchild had his team take down the trending topics immediately, the story continued to spread like wildfire, spiraling out of control.
Natalie scrolled through the comments, her blood boiling. But what could she do?
The gawkers didn’t care about the truth or any defense she might offer. All they wanted was a juicy piece of gossip to talk about over coffee.
She hesitated, wondering if she should even go to the Lockwood estate today, not after a scandal like this had broken.
As her employer, Terence Lockwood probably wouldn’t want her to continue working for his family.
Just as Natalie was wrestling with her thoughts, a commotion erupted outside her front door.
“This is it. We’ve confirmed with property management that this villa is registered under Old Mr. Fairchild’s name. Natalie really lives here. So, is she really being kept?”
“Let’s wait here for Natalie to come out. We’ll see if she denies her relationship with Old Mr. Fairchild or if she’s successfully forced his hand. A reliable source said last night’s photo was staged by Natalie herself because she wanted to make their relationship public.”
Peeking through the window, Natalie saw a swarm of reporters below. Their words drifted up to her, each one a sharp sting. Not only were they spreading rumors about her and Old Mr. Fairchild, but they were now claiming she had orchestrated the whole thing to pressure him into something more.
How could they be so absurd, so disgusting?
