Mrs. Lockwood had always thought brewing medicine was as simple as boiling herbs in water. She never realized there was so much to it.
“It seems you’re not a charlatan after all.”
Natalie smiled as she continued working with the herbs. “Ma’am, you have quite a sense of humor. You don’t have any of the airs of a high-society wife.”
Darren's mother, Mrs. Cross, was always going on about the airs a wealthy woman should have. All her high-society friends were the same, constantly posturing until their necks looked strained.
But Mrs. Lockwood was different. She had a relaxed, natural grace about her.
“The airs of a wealthy wife? I wouldn’t be caught dead putting on that pretentious act!”
The matriarch had spent over twenty years trying to mold her into the perfect high-society wife, but she had never quite managed to learn the part.
Natalie laughed. Mrs. Lockwood was easy to be around; she didn’t make you feel pressured.
Just then, Mrs. Lockwood let out a big yawn. Natalie looked at her and said, “Do you have trouble sleeping at night? Insomnia and restless dreams?”
Mrs. Lockwood nodded. “I do.”
It was an old problem of hers.
Natalie said, “Let me write you a prescription. A couple of doses should help you feel much better.”
Mrs. Lockwood replied, “Do you see everyone as a patient? I’m not drinking that awful herbal stuff. It’s terribly bitter.”
Just the thought of that dark, pungent medicine made Mrs. Lockwood recoil.
Natalie glanced at her with a faint smile. “While your skin is very fine and appears fair and smooth, the insomnia and restless nights are disrupting your hormone levels and reducing melatonin production, which is causing blemishes to appear. You use the best skincare products, but they only treat the symptoms, not the cause. They merely cover it up.”
