“Since you’re here to teach him, I’ll get back to my work.”
Terence had a lot of company business to attend to, but he had taken over tutoring Lucas so Natalie could have more time to read.
Now that Natalie was back, he could return to his own work.
Just then, Natalie said, “Wait, drink your medicine first.”
She brought over the bowl of medicine that had been left to cool on the table.
“Drink it.”
Terence looked at the inky black liquid and recoiled. “Forget it. I know the state of my own legs. No amount of medicine is going to help.”
“Are you a grown man or a child, afraid of a little medicine?”
Natalie looked at Terence, then turned to Liana. “Liana, your daddy is scared to drink his medicine. Are you scared to drink yours?”
Of course, Liana didn't want to drink it, but for the chance to speak again, and to keep Natalie by her side, she would drink the bitterest medicine.
Liana picked up her bowl and drank it down in one go.
It wasn't as bitter as she had expected. Natalie had added a few sweet-tasting herbs to mask the bitterness.
“Liana, you’re so brave! You finished your medicine so quickly. You’re much braver than your daddy.”
Liana beamed at the praise and began to sign with her hands.
[Daddy, drink your medicine, and Natalie will praise you. She might even give you a kiss.]
Natalie felt a surge of pride at the first sentence, but the last one nearly made her stumble. What did she mean, give him a kiss?
