Natalie was at a loss for words.
“I’ve been the daughter-in-law long enough to become the woman in charge. Arranging a pharmacy for you is no problem at all.”
“Just being allowed to read here is more than enough for me. A study is too much.”
Natalie knew this was no ordinary place. She was already thrilled to have been snuck in.
A private pharmacy of her own was something she didn't dare to imagine.
“Theory without practice is useless. Don’t worry, I’ll handle it. Just leave it to me. For now, just stay here and read.”
With that, Mrs. Lockwood left, leaving Natalie alone in the library.
These books were incredibly precious, yet she had been entrusted to be alone with them. It was a profound level of trust.
She remembered how Mrs. Cross used to watch her every move when she was cleaning her closet, her eyes filled with undisguised suspicion.
Any one of these ancient texts was worth more than a hundred of Mrs. Cross’s closets.
And yet, she was trusted completely.
Natalie looked at the shelves full of books, her eyes shining. This was a scene from her dreams. She felt as if she had dreamt of this place before, and now, unbelievably, it was real.
Natalie picked up *The Anatomy of Touch: Classical Massage Techniques* and began to read, completely engrossed.
She was so lost in the book that she didn't hear Lucas and Liana calling her name multiple times.
“Natalie, what are you doing here? We’re not allowed to come here.”
“Mrs. Lockwood said I could use this place for a little while.”
should leave before Great-Grandma finds out.”
Lucas had snuck in once before, and his great-grandmother had been furious. She doted on him and rarely got angry, but that incident had made it clear that this was no ordinary place. Even as her favorite great-grandson, he wasn't allowed inside.
“If that’s the case, then let’s go.”
