"That was all Auntie's doing! She was the one who hired doctors from abroad!" Hanley shouted. "They're the ones who cured Grandma's paralysis and nursed me back to health. It had nothing to do with you!"
Hanley completely denied all of Natalie's contributions, utterly indifferent to how his words would wound her.
Lucas muttered, "Hanley, you better not go out in a thunderstorm. Lightning's going to strike you until there's nothing left."
Marie stepped onto the stage. "That's right. I was the one who brought in specialists from overseas to treat my mother-in-law's paralysis. And Hanley was a sickly child. It was my meticulous care that made him healthy and strong."
Marie shot Natalie a venomous look. "Is there any mother in the world who would sabotage her own child? That girl has a disability and doesn't meet the qualifications. Disqualifying her is the normal thing to do. Yet you insist you can make her speak. Aren't you just deliberately blocking your own son? No wonder the child isn't close to you. You never think about him."
The people below began to whisper among themselves. While they felt sorry for the little girl, she was indeed mute. She probably should go to a special education institute instead of taking up a spot in the Junior Division, especially a spot that could go to Natalie's own son.
"Her 'own son'? That's the same son who was on TV a while back, accusing his mother of abusing him. He's a classic case of an ungrateful brat."
The crowd was divided, some agreeing with Marie, others pointing fingers at Natalie. But Natalie didn't care about any of them.

I love the sarcastic comebacks. Quite amusing!...
