Natalie ignored Victoria’s shouting and began to eat, helping herself to the food.
So this is what warm food tasted like. It was delicious.
"Don't worry, Mother. I know you all find Helena’s cooking unsatisfactory. That's why I've hired two new chefs. Both are award-winning culinary masters with excellent skills. Please, try the food. This whole table was prepared by them."
Watching Natalie eat with relish, and hearing that the entire meal was cooked by professional chefs, not her, sent a jolt of fury through Victoria and Marie. They exchanged a look, their lungs tight with anger.
Natalie was a servant, a slave. Cooking was her duty. How dare she order others around!
"Natalie, this meal wasn't made by you? You hired chefs? How dare you make such a decision on your own!"
"Mother, you yourself said that a delay with breakfast cost us the Fairchild deal. To avoid making such a costly mistake again, I took the liberty of hiring two chefs.
"From now on, all our meals will be handled properly, and there will be no more errors. Besides, you're not getting any younger, and your diet requires more attention. I specifically hired a chef who specializes in French cuisine. This cuisine has a sense of ritual, which I'm sure both you and Marie will enjoy."
Natalie’s explanation was flawless, leaving Victoria seething but without a comeback.
"Natalie, if you knew that a late meal could cause such a huge loss, you should have just been on time from now on! Why hire two chefs? Do you know how much their salaries will cost us in a year? How can you be so wasteful!"
Natalie remained unbothered, replying calmly, "So, Mother does realize that I am the one who prepares three meals a day, and that hiring others costs money. If you don't want these two chefs to stay, then please refrain from saying I do nothing but live a life of leisure as a pampered wife. And while you're at it, you can calculate my salary for the past five years."
