Old Mr. Fairchild felt a wave of dizziness wash over him. His ungrateful grandson was going to be the death of him.
Just then, Ms. Marsh chimed in, “This child was so fair-skinned since he was little. How is he still so pale after becoming a race car driver? He looks like a little girl. Do you remember when I used to put you in dresses?”
Old Mr. Wycliffe added, “He used to steal peaches from my tree, and our golden retriever would chase him all over. He jumped into the swimming pool to get away, but he didn't realize our dog could swim faster than him. Haha.”
Nicholas was mortified. He hadn’t wanted to come in precisely because these old-timers knew all his most embarrassing stories.
Natalie looked at Nicholas. He stood at six-foot-two now. Though his skin was fair and his features refined, his posture was straight, with broad shoulders and a narrow waist. It was hard to imagine he’d had such awkward moments as a child.
“You all have no filter, do you?” Old Mr. Fairchild said angrily. “Why bring up his embarrassing past? Can’t you say something nice? If Natalie marries my grandson, she’ll be able to visit you all the time.”
Old Mr. Wycliffe, who usually loved to argue with Old Mr. Fairchild, saw the logic in that. “Natalie,” he said excitedly, “let me tell you, this boy Nicholas has been smart since he was a kid. And he’s always been popular with the girls. Even when he was shorter than a motorcycle, girls were flocking to him.”
Hearing this, Old Mr. Fairchild’s anger subsided a bit. Wycliffe was usually a pain, but at least he knew what was important in this matter.
But then, Old Mr. Wycliffe’s brow furrowed. “That’s right. He’s been popular with girls since he was young, so how come I’ve never heard of him having a girlfriend? There are rumors that he’s… into men. It must be true!”
“Is that so? I don’t think I’ve ever heard about the kid having a girlfriend either. They’re too liberal overseas. No wonder he never wanted to come back and take over the family business. So that’s the reason.”
The comment hit Nicholas like a lightning bolt.
He… was gay?
He was so furious he could burst. He was about to retort when his grandfather beat him to it.
