“Reconnaissance,” Lucas blurted out before quickly correcting himself. “No, no, we’re just getting to know our hero! Mr. Mercer is our idol.”

Getting to know him? Their idol? Patrick didn’t think so. The way those two were looking at him wasn’t how you look at an idol. It was more like they were watching a thief.

“Natalie, the past is the past,” Darren said. “Come back with me now. Hanley would be so proud to have a mother like you. Your relationship could be repaired.”

Natalie scoffed. “Are you lecturing me now?”

Darren’s brow furrowed. “Don’t you want to fix things with your own child? Do you want Hanley to hate you forever? You’re his mother. When there’s a misunderstanding, shouldn’t you use your strengths to bridge the gap with him?”
