Darren’s words left Marie stunned. She hugged him tightly. “I’m sorry. I was wrong. I know what I did hurt you deeply, but we can be together now. We can set everything right. Can we please stop fighting?”

Darren pried her hands off him. “How could anything go back to the way it was? Between us stands my brother, Natalie, and my child with Natalie. Nothing can ever be the same.”

Hearing him accept her apology brought a flicker of relief to Marie’s heart, but the way he addressed her at the end shattered her illusions. He called her by her first name, not in intimacy but in formality. How could this be happening?
