“Some things don't need comparison. Natalie is my wife. Even if she’s not perfect, she’s my wife, and I will protect her.”
Darren’s words made Marie laugh bitterly. “Wife? Don’t you forget, you’re divorced. How can she still be your wife?”
“We’ll remarry,” Darren said, his gaze firm. “We have a child.”
“I don’t believe you! Remarry? You were tricked into marrying her in the first place! Her father set you up, forcing you two to sleep together. She only got into the Cross family because she was pregnant. You have no feelings for her! What is this really about? Some ridiculous competitive streak?”
Marie was convinced Darren was only acting this way because he saw other men flocking to Natalie after their divorce, and his pride couldn't take it.
“Do you really think,” Darren said coolly, “that if I hadn’t wanted to marry her, a pregnancy would have been enough to get her through the doors of the Cross family?”
Marie was shocked. “Darren, what are you saying?”
She didn’t understand. Wasn’t he manipulated into it? Wasn't it just to spite her? Shortly after she married his brother, Darren had been set up to sleep with Natalie, who soon became pregnant.
Her father, Martin Doyle, had then gone to the media, creating a massive scandal about how Darren had gotten his daughter pregnant and was refusing to take responsibility.
At the time, Darren’s dying grandfather was gravely ill and wanted to see the next generation of the Cross family secured, so he ordered Darren to marry her.
Darren had clearly been forced into it.
“I don’t believe you! You must be lying. I know you care about me, otherwise you wouldn’t have accepted all the things I did for you. That day in the car… if Natalie hadn’t called the police, if they hadn’t interrupted us, we would have already…”
She couldn’t bring herself to say the words.
Flushed with anger and embarrassment, Darren cut her off. “Enough! Don’t say another word. You know I was drugged that day. Thank God… nothing happened between us.”
That day, his mother, Victoria, had put something in his soup.
He had to admit, if the police hadn’t shown up, he wouldn’t have been able to resist.

Time for Marie to get her end, this has gone on way too long, time to move on. It’s getting boring....
Payback time. Waiting for chapters 321 onwards!...
I love the sarcastic comebacks. Quite amusing!...
