Noticing Marie's foul mood, Victoria immediately grabbed Hanley. “Your parent-teacher conferences have always been attended by Marie. Why are you asking this woman to go? She and your daddy are divorced. She’s not your mommy anymore. She’s already moving on to be a stepmother to other children. Don’t you see what’s happening?”

Victoria’s tone was harsh, and Hanley had never seen his grandmother so furious with him.

Natalie retorted, “Victoria, being old doesn’t give you a license to spout nonsense.”

Hanley looked at his father. “Daddy, please tell Grandma not to be so mean to Mommy. If she keeps this up, Mommy won’t come to my conference.”

It confirmed his suspicions. It wasn’t a misunderstanding. She just didn’t want to come back.

“Natalie, the child has already apologized to you. It’s just a conference. Why won’t you go? I can understand you not forgiving me because you don't believe my explanations. But what about him? Why won’t you forgive our son? Is it because you see him as a burden?”

Natalie had no desire to respond to Darren’s sharp accusation.

Hanley, seeing his dad grilling his mom, grew flustered. He wanted his dad to put in a good word for him, not make things worse. How was his mom supposed to agree now?

Hanley quickly said to Darren, “Daddy, Mommy can’t come to my conference because she has to work. Daddy, Mommy’s job is too hard. Please convince her to stop working for the Lockwoods. Ask her to come home with us.”
