“Daddy, what are you saying? You’re going to marry Auntie Marie?”

Hanley snapped out of his shock, his eyes wide with disbelief. “Daddy, are you really going to marry Auntie Marie? But you told me you were going to get back together with Mommy. I saw it online. You used drones to apologize to Mommy. You were trying to get back with her.”

“Don’t talk about getting back together. Your mother and I are never getting back together!”

“But… but I still want Mommy to come to my parent-teacher conference. If you marry Marie, Mommy will be even less likely to come, right?”

He quickly looked up at Marie. Her face was dark and twisted, like a monster that eats children.

Hanley trembled. “Auntie, I… I’d be very happy for you to be my mommy too.”

“You’d be happy? I don’t see you looking very happy. Weren’t you just begging for Natalie and your daddy to get back together?”

Marie suddenly grabbed Hanley’s wrist, squeezing it so hard he felt like it would snap. He cried out in pain, begging for mercy.
