“Marie, my arm hurts! You’re hurting me!”

“That hurts? My heart hurts more. I’ve taken care of you for five years, and you’ve been lying to me this whole time. You don’t want me to be your mommy. You want your daddy to get back with that woman. Naughty children who lie must be punished.”

Marie let out a sudden, sharp shout and then shoved him. Hanley stumbled and fell into the middle of the road. At that moment, he saw a large truck barreling toward him. He was frozen in terror.

With a loud screech of tires, the truck came to a halt. Hanley was scared out of his wits, his face ghostly white.

The truck driver leaned out of his window and started yelling curses.

“Whose kid is this? Don’t you people watch your children? Letting him run wild in the street like that! Is he trying to get himself killed? Don’t drag me into it!”

Hanley, already scared half to death, began to shiver uncontrollably at the driver’s angry shouts.

Marie leisurely walked over. “I’m so sorry, sir. I just took my eyes off him for a second.”

The driver continued to grumble. “You better watch your kid next time, or it’ll be his own damn fault if he gets run over!”

Marie replied in a slow, deliberate tone, “You’re right. A reckless child like him is bound to get hit sooner or later. We were lucky to run into you today. Thank you so much!”

Hanley sat slumped on the ground. Marie pulled him up and dusted him off. “Hanley, boys can’t be so timid. I just spoke a little loudly, and it sent you running into the street. You’re the future heir of the Cross Group. You can’t be so reckless. If anything were to happen to you, who would inherit the company?”

Hanley’s face was still ashen, and he breathed shallowly, cautiously.

Seeing Hanley’s terrified expression, Marie continued, “Don’t you worry. I will help the Cross Group become one of the great elite families. When you grow up, you will be the head of that family, a man everyone envies, at the very top of the world.”

Hanley nodded mechanically, but he was still in a daze.
