Marie turned to Natalie, her face a cold mask. "Natalie, you should know your place. Darren and I are working for the good of the Cross Group. Why are you making trouble?"
Darren was already on edge from the auction. Now, hearing this ridiculous claim that she had painted the picture, he grew even more furious.
This would make it look like they were deliberately trying to deceive Old Mr. Fairchild with a forgery, and the consequences would be severe.
Darren grabbed Natalie's wrist, hissing, "That's enough. You're completely useless, always causing problems. Go home!"
His eyes burned with intensity. If she would just stay home and be the housewife she was supposed to be, he would continue to grant her the dignity of being Mrs. Cross.
But the future of the Cross Group was on the line. How could she throw a tantrum at a time like this?
Before he could drag her away, Lucas stepped forward and smacked his hand away. "Get your filthy hands off her! You don't deserve to touch her!"
Darren's eyes blazed with anger, but Natalie met his gaze directly. "You're the ones who told me to come here and observe Marie's 'capabilities.' You rushed to get that painting last night. If you had just told me, I could have painted a new one for you."
Darren and Marie were about to explode.
"Natalie, how dare you say that? Darren, get her out of here before she ruins everything. If Old Mr. Fairchild gets the wrong idea, the consequences will be dire."
"Natalie, you're coming home with me!"
Darren tried to pull Natalie away again, but Terence's wheelchair moved to block him, bumping into him sharply.
He stumbled back and fell to the ground, wincing in pain.
"Mr. Cross, a man who doesn't know how to treat a lady doesn't deserve a wife."
Lucas chimed in, "That's right! He's not good enough for Natalie."
