Mrs. Peterson said, “When my husband died, I wanted to report Marie. But the Ward family is rich and powerful, and Marie is ruthless. She murdered her own brother and tried to silence me. I couldn't fight people like you. I was afraid of dragging my son into it, so I kept my mouth shut. But I can't stay silent any longer.”

Darren said, “You were paid, so of course you can’t stay silent. How much did Terence give you to frame Marie? I can double it!”

“Mr. Lockwood didn’t bribe me at all! For the past year, I’ve wanted to testify against Marie. But she’s the kind of person who would harm her own brother and even try to kill me to keep me quiet. I was too afraid of endangering my son to come forward.”

“You keep saying Marie harmed her brother and that your husband’s death was because she tried to silence you. Why don't you first explain stealing Marie’s necklace a year ago?”

Mrs. Peterson shot back, “What proof do you have? What proof do you have that I was paid, or that I stole Marie’s necklace and tried to flee because I was afraid of being exposed?”

Darren said, “I have a witness who can prove you stole the necklace.”

Darren looked toward the door. “You can come in now.”

Just then, Martha, a maid from the Ward family, entered.

Mrs. Peterson said, her voice filled with despair, “When did I ever steal her necklace? Martha, how could you frame me? We were so close, how could you do this to me? Don’t you know my husband died at sea because of Marie? How could you lie like this? How much did they pay you?”

Darren said, “I said you took money from Terence, and you denied it. Now you’re accusing someone else of taking money from us. Do you think the police will only listen to you?”

The police officer interjected, “We have recorded everything you've both said. We will investigate and find out the truth. You both have conflicting stories, and one of you is clearly framing the other. We will not let it go.”

Marie turned to her parents. “Mom, Dad, do you see now? Mrs. Peterson took money from Terence to frame me. The reason she left without a word, sneaking away like a thief, was because she stole my necklace. Mom, Dad, my brother was so good to me. How could I possibly harm him? You raised me yourselves. Don't you know me? I’m a human being, not a monster. How could I hurt my own brother? Mom, Dad, you have to believe me.”
