Victoria followed her words with a series of strategic coughs, pretending to be incredibly weak.
Marie looked at Victoria and felt sick to her stomach. She knew this woman hadn't come to see her out of kindness; she was here for money.
But for now, they were her lifeline. She couldn’t afford to offend them.
So, suppressing her disgust, Marie said, “Mom, it must have cost a lot to pull all those strings for me, and you can’t neglect your health. There’s a safe in my room with a lot of jewelry in it. You can sell it. It should be worth at least a hundred million. It’s not a lot, but it should help for now.”
A huge grin spread across Victoria’s face that she couldn’t hide.
She had been after the contents of that safe, and Marie was being sensible.
Victoria feigned reluctance. “But those are your favorite pieces of jewelry. How could we sell them? No, absolutely not.”
Marie was so annoyed her face nearly twitched. This woman was an even better actor than she was.
“Mom, these are desperate times. We need the money, so just use it. If I don’t get out, those things are useless to me anyway.”
“You’re right, Marie. If you can’t get out, those things are just meaningless possessions. Don’t worry, we’ll spend whatever it takes to get you out sooner. I’ll take them for now. In the future, when the Cross family is prosperous again, I’ll buy them all back for you. What’s the code?”
Marie was utterly speechless.
She was saying no, no, no, but she couldn’t have been more eager to get the password.
Buy them back for her?
With a humorless smile, Marie thought she'd never heard of a wolf spitting something back out once it was swallowed.
How could this be?
Their minds went blank.
“What video? Show me.”
“You can’t bring phones in here. We’ll have to go outside to see it.”
Seeing them about to leave, Marie completely lost it.
“Don’t go! What’s going on? Tell me everything, right now!”
The lawyer explained, “There’s not much point in showing you the video now. I’ve watched it several times. Terence definitely did not touch Mr. Darren Cross. Public opinion online has completely turned around. The people who were cursing Terence are now aiming all their anger at Hanley Cross.”

Time for Marie to get her end, this has gone on way too long, time to move on. It’s getting boring....
Payback time. Waiting for chapters 321 onwards!...
I love the sarcastic comebacks. Quite amusing!...
