Just as Natalie turned to go, Darren suddenly grabbed her hand. “Forget it, don’t go. It’s not like we don’t have maids.”

Darren glanced toward the staff. “Helena, go make something for lady Marie.”

Helena, one of the maids, froze for a moment before nodding. This was bad. Mrs. Ward was notoriously picky, and even lady Natalie’s cooking was often met with criticism. She was doomed.

Without another word, Darren pulled Natalie away, leaving Marie standing alone, seething with frustration.

“Something came up tonight, and I couldn’t be here for our anniversary cake. Are you angry with me?”

Darren’s voice was gentle, so gentle that for a second, she almost believed the filth she’d witnessed had been a hallucination.

“I saw the cake. It was thrown in the trash.”

Natalie looked up at him. Darren cupped her face, his eyes shimmering. “That was my fault. No matter how busy I was, I should have stayed to blow out the candles and eat the cake with you. It was our fifth anniversary, after all. From now on, our anniversaries will be just for the two of us. No one else, no interruptions.”

How touching. She almost believed him.

A faint smile played on Natalie’s lips as she spoke, her voice soft but firm. “Darren, let’s get a divorce.”

Darren’s expression changed instantly, turning dark and agitated. “Natalie, what are you talking about? Just because I didn’t have cake with you?”

“Darren, I’m just a housewife. I’m not good enough for you. Let’s get a divorce. I’ll take our son.”

Suddenly, his long fingers wrapped around her slender, pale neck. His eyes were bloodshot as he snarled, “What do you take me for, Natalie? Something you can just throw away? Let me tell you, a divorce is impossible. If you ever mention those words again, I’ll send our son abroad, and you will never see him again.”

Natalie smiled with a sense of release. She knew he would do this.

But she would be one step ahead of him. She would take their son and leave the country first.

Realizing he’d lost control, Darren released his grip, a flicker of panic in his eyes.

“Is it because Mom and Hanley both favor Marie? Does that make you unhappy?”

Natalie stared at him, her gaze growing deeper, colder.
