His closeness to Marie was largely because, after he was born, his grandmother declared that Natalie’s humble origins made her unfit to raise him. She insisted Marie, with her prestigious background, was better suited for the task, leaving Natalie to handle only his meals and daily care.
Darren had said Marie didn’t have children of her own, so Hanley should spend more time with her.-
She had believed their intentions were good. She never imagined they were so rotten.
As Natalie seethed with grief and anger, Marie raised an eyebrow and said pointedly, “I’m feeling a little hungry.”
Hanley immediately turned to Natalie, his tone serious. “Mommy, Auntie Marie and Daddy worked so late. Why didn’t you prepare a late-night snack for them?”
Natalie stood frozen, her son’s words stabbing her like a knife.
“Mommy, Auntie Marie and Daddy are working hard to give me a better life. You need to contribute too, not just waste your time on those traditional medicine. You should be more like Auntie Marie and become a powerful businesswoman. Stop embarrassing me at kindergarten!”
Marie said smugly, “Hanley, your mother is just a housewife. How could she ever be a powerful businesswoman? The corporate world isn’t for just anyone.”
Victoria chimed in with a sneer, “That’s right, Hanley. Your Auntie Marie is from a noble family, the heiress of the Ward Group. Your mother is just a country girl. What could she possibly know about business? If she keeps this family fed and the house clean, she’s already served her purpose.”
Just then, Darren spoke impatiently. “Alright, that’s enough. It’s late. Hanley, go to bed. You have school tomorrow.”
At Darren’s urging, Hanley finally went to his room, but not before reminding Natalie to make a snack for his dear auntie.
Her wonderful son.
“Natalie, Marie is hungry. Go make her some porridge.”
Darren started to head to his room. Natalie let out a cold laugh. Both father and son were terrified Marie might starve.
How many nights in the past had they asked her to make them a late-night meal?
Victoria scoffed. “CEO’s wife? Her? Does she even deserve the title? She sits at home all day playing the pampered wife. How could she understand how hard you work? So many people would kill for a partnership with the Fairchild Conglomerate, but you’re the only one who could pull it off. What does a country bumpkin like her know about anything?”
Pampered wife?
Natalie glanced at her hands. She spent her days cooking and cleaning for them. Under Victoria’s demanding watch, she even had to scrub the carpets by hand.
What kind of pampered wife lived like that?
“Natalie, what are you standing there for? Go make the snack.”
Natalie’s eyes were deep pools of darkness, betraying no emotion.
“Fine, I’ll go.”

Time for Marie to get her end, this has gone on way too long, time to move on. It’s getting boring....
Payback time. Waiting for chapters 321 onwards!...
I love the sarcastic comebacks. Quite amusing!...
