Marcus gripped Natalie’s shoulders tightly. She frowned, and he immediately realized he was being too forceful, letting go and apologizing profusely.

“I’m so sorry, Natalie. I was too rough. It’s my fault. If only I’d found you sooner, you wouldn’t have had to suffer so much. I’m sorry, it’s all my fault.”

Elaine Ward scolded Marcus, “Use your words, not your hands! Did you hurt your sister?”

Richard also looked at Natalie with concern. “That boy is so clumsy. Did he hurt you?”

Natalie watched the Wards’ frantic concern, and it wasn't that she felt nothing.

But her entire life had taught her to keep her heart guarded. Especially with these three, who had once been Marie’s family.

He then turned back to her, his voice full of regret. “I didn’t think this through. I just wanted to give you the best, but I didn’t realize it would cause such a scene and lead to people gossiping about you. I promise we won’t do this again.”

“Thanks,” Natalie said.

That one word, “thanks,” was a blow to Marcus and his parents. They knew it wasn’t a thank you for his defense, but for his promise to leave her alone in the future.

Their daughter still wouldn't forgive them. And they couldn't blame her. After the way they had insulted and humiliated her over Marie, they couldn't expect her to feel lucky just because they were her rich and powerful biological parents. In fact, it probably only made things worse.
