“Don't worry, Hanley will be fine.”
Darren Cross tried to comfort Natalie, but she was frantic. They couldn't just sit here and wait; they had to find a way out.
Natalie tried to climb the vines to get out, but they weren't strong enough to hold her weight.
She searched everywhere for some kind of tool, but there was nothing useful in the cave.
Natalie screamed for help, but the distance from the bottom of the cave to the opening was too great. No one above would be able to hear them.
“Natalie, we should save our strength,” Darren said. “Yelling like this won't help. No one up there can hear us. All we can do now is wait for someone to find us.”
Natalie started searching the cave again. “What are you doing?” Darren asked. “We need to do something so people can find us faster.”
Natalie was looking for something to start a fire. If she could light some dry wood, the smoke might signal their location to the people above.
Darren watched as Natalie gathered fallen twigs. She looked up at him. “Do you have a lighter?”
“No... I don't.”
When Darren said he didn't, Natalie decided to try the old-fashioned way: rubbing sticks together to strike a spark.
Darren watched her. Ever since they had fallen, she hadn't stopped for a moment, constantly searching for a way out or a way to get rescued.
But she hadn't said more than a few words to him. It had been a long time since they were alone together like this.
Watching Natalie struggle, Darren offered, “Here, let me do that.”
“I've got it.”
Natalie kept trying to start the fire, but after a long while, she still had no success.
And now he was telling her he'd come here to reminisce about their time together.
Just then, Natalie looked at Darren. “You know where Hanley is, don't you?”
“I've already sent people to the old campsite to look for him. If I'm not mistaken, that's where he'll be.”
“If you knew where he was, why did you drag me up here to search everywhere?”
“Because I knew what he wanted was for his mom and dad to go camping with him here. I don't know how he got the nerve to run off on his own, but I knew you wouldn't have come with me otherwise. I just wanted to make his wish come true. I never expected... that we'd fall in here.”
“Darren, you are... You'd better hope nothing happened to Hanley. If he's hurt, I will never forgive you.”
Natalie was furious. She was even more furious with herself for falling for their trap.
“We both regret it. My son and I... we never should have let you go. Hanley regrets it, and so do I.”
