…
Inside the studio.
Marie was delivering the performance of a lifetime when she was jarringly interrupted by a command to halt.
The director burst onto the set, his face pale with panic. “Cut the broadcast! Stop recording, now!”
The director’s frantic energy infected the crew, and they scrambled to shut down the cameras and equipment.
Marie’s face hardened. “Who are you? By what authority are you stopping this interview?”
“My apologies, Ms. Ward,” the director stammered. “The order came from the top. They said to suspend the program immediately.”
“The top?” Marie scoffed. “Do your bosses have any idea who I am? How dare they interfere with my interview.”
“Ms. Ward, I’m truly sorry, but this is far above my pay grade. An order is an order. Perhaps you should consider if you’ve recently angered someone… important.”
“I *am* Ms. Ward. I’m the important one here. Who could I possibly have to fear?” she sneered. “This backwater station is beneath me anyway. I never wanted to do this interview here to begin with. Hanley, we’re leaving.”
Marie grabbed Hanley’s hand and stormed out of the studio.
This was the first time Hanley had ever seen his all-powerful aunt get shut down. He was confused. Wasn’t his aunt the most powerful person in the world? Didn’t everyone have to do what she said? Why weren’t these people listening to her?
…
In the Lockwood residence.
Liana signed animatedly: [Brother, did you hear someone shout, ‘Word from the top, suspend the program!’?]
Lucas nodded. “I heard, sister. Looks like their little show got canceled. Someone else stepped in.”
[Brother, who stopped the interview?]
