“That boy on the TV,” Lucas said, his expression serious. “Whatever kindergarten he attends, that’s where I’m going.”
“The boy on television was Hanley Cross, the young master of the Cross family,” the butler clarified. “You wish to attend the same school as him?”
Lucas despised kindergarten. He found it mind-numbingly boring. Besides, his sister refused to go because she couldn’t speak, and he didn't want her to be lonely at home, so he’d always found creative ways to get himself expelled.
But now, things were different. It was clear to him that someone desperately needed… a proper education.
“That’s right. I’m going to be classmates with that little Cross brat. Sister, you be a good girl and play at home for a few days. I’ll be back to play with you as soon as I’ve dealt with him.”
Liana gave him two thumbs up.
[Go get him, brother!]
The butler looked to Terence for guidance. Terence’s voice was like ice. “Do as he says. Enroll him tomorrow.”
…
In front of a clinic.
“Ms. Verdan, I’m sorry, but we don’t have any openings at the moment. Perhaps you could try elsewhere.”
“Ms. Verdan, you laid hands on your own child. How could we possibly trust you with our patients?”
“You’re Natalie, aren’t you? You have some nerve showing your face. How could you beat your own son like that? You’re a disgrace! Looking for a job? You should just go die!”
Natalie was met with rejection after rejection, each one laced with more venom than the last.
To be honest, she was starting to break.
The weight of the world felt suffocating, crushing the very air from her lungs. She didn’t even have the energy to defend herself.
She sank onto a nearby step, her vision blurring with unshed tears. She wouldn’t let them fall. She refused.
Just then, a sleek black Maybach pulled up to the curb in front of her.
The window glided down, revealing Terence.
His profile was cold, sharp, and breathtakingly handsome.
His sudden appearance was enough to make Natalie force the tears back down.
Terence turned his head, his dark eyes locking onto hers. “I hear you’re looking for a job.”
Natalie’s voice was flat. “I am. And I can’t find one.”
“You could consider coming to work for the Lockwood family.”
“Work for the Lockwood family?”
