Hanley was incredibly annoyed. His family was the wealthiest in the class, a fact that had always given him a sense of superiority.
The teacher said, “Let’s find a seat for Lucas. Who would like to sit with him?”
“Me, me!”
“I do!”
The children were all enthusiastic. Hanley, however, wore a dark expression that clearly said, ‘stay away from me’.
The teacher was trying to decide where to put Lucas when he suddenly pointed at Hanley. “Teacher, I’ll sit next to him.”
Hanley’s brow furrowed into a knot.
Unlike those other tasteless classmates, he hadn't volunteered. Was this new kid blind or deaf?
“Alright then, you can sit next to Hanley.”
Hanley immediately shot to his feet, his temper flaring.
“I’m not sitting with him!” he declared.
The teacher asked, “Hanley, why don’t you want to sit with our new classmate?”
“No reason. I just don’t want to.”
Hanley had always considered himself a cut above the rest. His family was at the top of the city’s wealth rankings, and now some kid from an even wealthier family had shown up. That was bad enough. But sitting next to him?
It was just adding insult to injury.
The teacher said, “Lucas, since Hanley doesn’t want you to sit next to him, how about we pick another classmate? All the children in our class are very nice.”
“Teacher, I want to sit next to him!”
Lucas was resolute. He had the look of someone who would tear the roof off if he didn’t get his way.
Now he was stuck. Lucas wanted to sit next to Hanley, but Hanley refused.
