"What do you mean, let you go? Isabella, you're ruining the mood. Don't forget, you're the one who begged to come along."
"Exactly. We agreed that if you couldn't handle the drinks, you'd dance. If you can't play the game, don't show up!"
In the shadowed corridor, a crowd of young men and women had surrounded Isabella. A few of the guys were clearly up to no good, intentionally tugging at the hem of her dress.
Preston glanced back at Kael. "Go see what's happening."
Why was he suddenly playing the hero?
Kael swallowed his complaints, limping into the crowd with his cane, wearing his usual cocky grin. "Move it! What are you kids doing crowding around here?"
The onlookers were all wealthy heirs and heiresses from the elite academy. They instantly recognized Kael, dropping their arrogant sneers and greeting him with polite smiles. "Kael."
Isabella had initially thought someone was coming to her rescue, but the moment she saw Kael, the blood drained from her face.
A month ago, Vivienne had blatantly run this same young master down with a car right in front of her, putting him in the hospital. The memory still terrified her. She hadn't expected to run into the living nightmare himself.
Kael jutted his chin toward Isabella. "What's going on here?"
The crowd exchanged uneasy glances. The tall guy leading the pack probed cautiously, "Kael, do you know her?"
Kael frowned and slapped the tall guy firmly on the back of the head. "Am I asking the questions, or are you?"
"Right, right..." The tall guy lost all his bravado, bowing apologetically. "Boss, we're not making things hard for her. We all came out to have a good time. We agreed that if she couldn't handle her alcohol, she had to dance. Now she won't drink, won't dance, and wants to run. The guys weren't happy, so words were exchanged."
Kael shot Isabella a sideways glance. Seeing her keeping her head firmly down, too terrified to look at him, he scoffed. "What kind of dance?"
The crowd fell silent, looking incredibly awkward.
The tall guy braced himself and whispered an explanation. "Boss, Bernard paid good money for her. We just wanted some entertainment."
"Bernard?" Kael raised an eyebrow, shooting the guy a look of pure disgust. "Which Bernard? Bernard Whitmore?"
The tall guy nodded, pointing toward the private room across the hall. "Boss, Bernard is inside. You know how it is. You pay for a playmate to have a good time. This girl is killing the vibe, and Bernard got annoyed. He insisted she strip and dance. Our hands are tied."
"Got it." Kael nodded, turning on his heel to leave.
