Chapter 28

DYLAN

I felt lightheaded, like I might pass out from holding my breath the entire time. My cheeks were on fire, the heat of my embarrassment spreading through me. I still couldn’t wrap my head around the fact that he made me comeright there in the carwith someone else just a few feet away.

Even though the driver didn’t so much as glance back, it didn’t make the situation any less mortifying.

I let out a sigh of relief once the car finally stopped. I noticed that we didn’t go back to his penthouse. Instead, we stopped in front of a huge mansion.

The mansion stood tall at the end of a long, curving driveway, hidden behind high iron gates and thick bushes that seemed to hold dark secrets. It looked like a classic beauty and quiet threatits stone walls covered in vines, with tall marble pillars at the front and huge wooden doors carved with strange symbols that made you feel like they belonged to a powerful, ancient family.

Dozens of windows reflected the moonlight, all of them covered with heavy curtains, hiding whatever was inside. Black railings lined the balconies, which looked out over perfect gardens that seemed too neat to be harmless. Everything about the place showed power and wealthnot something passed down through generations, but something earned through fear and control.

Water poured gently from fountains in the courtyard, the soft sound contrasting with the men holding guns who stood guard at every corner. This wasn’t just a house. It was a fortressa beautiful prison covered in gold

and marble.

One of his men opened the door for me, and the other one did the same for him.

Where are we?I asked as soon as we stepped out of the car.

We’re at my house,he replied as he walked past me, leading the way.

But I stood still as my eyes roamed around the place. I was hesitating. I’m not sure whether coming inside was a good idea. Despite its glamorous facade, with all the armed men surrounding its every corner, it’s more like a prison.

Are you coming? His deep and baritone voice pulled me out of my reverie.

I turned to look at him and saw his arm stretched out, his hand gently reaching for mine. And somehow, just like that, every worry I had seemed to fade. All the fear I’d been holding onto melted away in the warmth of his presence. He was like light breaking through the shadows of this cold, gloomy place.

Funny, reallybecause he was the very reason all of this darkness existed in the first place.

But as I looked at this man, I was immediately reminded of what happened in the car. I feel like a cold bucket of water over my head. This is all wrong. I should have never allowed this.

I let out a loud sigh. What am I doing here? I should leave while I still can.

II think I should go now. Thanks for your help, but you don’t have to. I can take care of myself.I bowed my

head and turned my back, attempting to leave.

I hadn’t taken a few steps when I felt my feet lifting from the ground. The next thing I knew, my world was turned upside down. A strong pair of arms was holding me steady while hanging on top of his shoulder.

What is wrong with you? Put me down!I shrieked, squirming in his arms like a wildcat as he carried me effortlessly down the marble corridor. My fists thumped against his back, and I kicked my legs in protest. Hunter! I mean itput me down!

Quit struggling,he said coolly, and then a loud, firm swat landed right on my bottom.

I gasped, scandalized. You did not just do that!My eyes went wide in shock as my mouth hung open. Put me down, you brute!

But he remained unfazed, carrying me like I weighed nothing more than a feather. Around us, his men stood silently, tryingand failingto keep their faces straight. They watched but didn’t dare to interfere. No one in their right mind would cross Hunter Gage De Marco.

Enraged, I balled my fist and punched his back with everything I had. It didn’t even faze him. Instead, he laugheddeep, rich, and annoyingly amused. The sound of it rumbled through his body and into mine, sending unwanted shivers down my spine. My face burned with embarrassment and something else I wasn’t ready to name.

I swear, if you don’t put me down this instant-

You’ll what?He cut me off, his voice laced with amusement.

I let out a frustrated huff, refusing to answer. There was no point. He thrived off my resistance. It was like feeding fuel to a fire that never burned out.

He finally reached a large set of double doors at the end of the hallwaydarker wood, carved with elegant patterns. He didn’t hesitate. With one swift kick, the door flew open, revealing a room so grand, it nearly took my breath away.

The walls were a deep, moody charcoal, softened by golden lighting from a massive chandelier hanging above. Floortoceiling windows lined one side of the room, covered with thick velvet drapes. A sleek fireplace roared quietly on the far wall, casting shadows that danced across the marble floor. And in the center of it all was a bed large enough to drown in.

Where are you taking me?I started, despite knowing exactly where we are.

He didn’t answer. He strode into the room and finally threw me into the middle of the bed. He threw so hard that I bounced against the mattress.

Bastard!I cursed while glaring at him.

I was about to get up, but he quickly positioned himself on top of me. He imprisoned my thighs in between his, and he pinned me against the bed.

This is my room,he whispered, his lips gently brushing against mine. And now, it’s yours too.”

I blinked. What?

He reached up and brushed a strand of hair from my face. You’re soontobe my wife. It’s normal for us to share a room, is it not?

I frowned, That was all an act, Hunter. I just got divorced. You can’t expect me to jump right into another marriage.

Why not? Your exhusband did,” he replied.

His words stung a little bit. I took a deep breath. We are not the same,I responded, averting my gaze away from him.

I heard his heavy breathing. He sounded pissed.

Why? Because you’re still in love with your exhusband? He asked, his voice filled with bitterness and accusation.

I turned my head towards him and looked him straight in the eyes. And with all my courage, I replied, That’s none of your business.”

I saw his jaw clenched and his eyes burning in rage. This must be the man they were all afraid of. And I unknowingly unleashed the monster.

I gulped as I was trying to steady my breathing: I tried my best not to show any fear.

After what seems like forever, he pushed himself up and got off of the bed. I let out a loud breath that I didn’t realize I was holding.

I gently got up from the bed and sat on the edge of it. His back was facing me, so I had the privilege of watching his back. I couldn’t see his face, so I’m not sure what he was thinking right now.
