Chapter 39

DYLAN

I felt overwhelmed as the people who just arrived gathered all around things I don’t exactly understand. Somehow, I feel like everything was and found myself bursting.

Stop!I shouted, and in an instant, the whole room became quig.

Everybody was talking simultaneously about moving too fast. Suddenly, I got too overwhelmed

They were all stunned and turned towards me at once. Even Huer, who was busy on his laptop, raised his head and looked at me with a dark face. He then looked at all the people as if he was checking if anybody did something wrong that warranted my reaction. My eyes widened in shock when he suddenly raised his hand holding a gun.

Tell me who pissed you off, little dove. And I’m going to end their life right now,” he announced coldly.

Panic spiked through me so fast I almost couldn’t breathe.

Will you please stop that?I blurted, stepping forward before I could think. My feet felt rooted, but I made myself move. I put my hands out between him and the nearest planner like a thin shield. Nobody. Pleaselower your gun.”

For a long beat he didn’t move. His eyes were hard, pupils pinpoint, like a man standing on a cliff. Around us, the wedding team went quietpapers rustled, a glass clinked, and someone swallowed audibly. I could hear my own pulse in my ears.

You really have a habit of using your body as a shield, do you?His voice was low and dangerous.

Just like you have a habit of pointing your gun when you feel like it,” I snapped, louder than I meant to. My voice shook. Lower the gun.I repeated. I stepped closer, closing the small space between us. My heart was still racing, but I had to steady my voice. You can’t do that,I said quietly. You can’t make threats like that in front of people. It scares them.

He smirked, And you’re not?

Somehow, his question struck a chord deep inside me. He might be the most dangerous man I’ve ever known, capable of things I couldn’t even imagine, yetNot once have I truly feared him. Despite everything I’ve seen him do, I just know— somewhere deep in my gutthat he would never hurt me. Not physically, at least.

I can still feel the tension engulfing the entire room. No one dared to make afraid to make a mistake that may cost their lives.

move. Everyone

And after what seems like an eternity, he finally lowered his gun

was

holding their breath,

So, what seems to be the problem, little dove?he asked.

Make them leave,I answered.

He frowned as his face darkened. He was glaring at me for a moment before he retreated.

You heard her. Leave,he ordered, and everyone moved in a swift. It didn’t even take more than five minutes before the whole room was empty. The only people left standing in the middle of the room were us.

He stood there, his hands in his pockets, looking at me with that dark expression that made my stomach twist. The silence between us was heavytoo heavy. I could almost hear the ticking of his jaw as he clenched it.

I swallowed hard, my heart pounding. I don’t think we have to overdo this. We both know we’re only pretending. There’s no need to make it look so real. It’s not like we are really going to ge married.

His

eyes narrowed dangerously, the kind of look that could make grown men beg for mercy. Says who?His voice was low but sharp as a blade.

What do you mean?I said, standing my ground even though my voice wavered slightly. We agreed that this is just for show. We’re not really-

We are getting married, Dylan,he cut me off, his tone cold, fina).

I froze, my breath catching in my throat. His gaze was burning into me now, intense and unreadable. You can’t be seriousI whispered, unsure what to say.

He took a step forward, and instinctively, I stepped backuntily back hit the wall. He didn’t touch me, but the weight of his stare was enough to make me tremble.

Oh, I’m very much serious, little dove,he said.

I blinked, stunned. What are you saying?

He tilted his head, his expression unreadable now, but his eyeshose cold, beautiful eyeswere full of something I couldn’t name. You heard it right, baby,he murmured. You’ll be my wife. In name, and in papers.

My lips parted. Are you out of your mind?

Maybe, I am. And I’ll be even more insane if you keep on rejecting me. You don’t want that, do you?

I just got out of my miserable marriage. You can’t expect me to jump into another one just like that,” I insisted.

His jaw tightened, the muscle flexing as he stared at me like he was barely keeping his temper in check. This isn’t just another marriage, Dylan,he said, his voice low and dangerous. You think I’m doing this for a show? For business? No. I’m doing this because I want youbecause I can’t stand the thought of any man touching you, even in your memories.

My stomach dropped. The intensity in his tone wasn’t something I could brush off. It wasn’t empty jealousyit was obsession, raw and unfiltered.

HunterI whispered, my throat suddenly dry. You don’t mean that.

Oh, I mean every word,he countered. He leaned closer until I could feel his fresh minty breath brushing against my face, and our lips were only inches away from each other. You think I don’t know what that bastard did to you? You think I didn’t watch you pretend to smile when you were dying inside? His voice cracked slightly, and for a fleeting moment, I saw the pain behind his fury. I should’ve taken you away from him sooner.”

II don’t understand,I uttered, my voice trembling.

There were a lot of things that you weren’t aware of, little dove,he replied.

My heart was beating wildly now, torn between anger, confusion, and something far more dangerous. You’re right,I said, shaking my head. But if there’s one thing that I was clearly aware of, it’s that I can’t do this again. I can’t live being in another loveless mar-

His hand moved faster than my words. He slammed his palm against the wall beside my head, caging me in, his breath warm against my skin. We have all the time in the world for that, little dove,he growled. I’ll make sure you’ll fall in love with me even before our wedding ends.”

I gasped softly, trying to steady my voice. You can’t force me into this.

He leaned in closer, his lips almost brushing my ear as he whispered, Then don’t make me. Say yes, Dylan.

I said no, Hunter.” My voice came out firm this time, even though my heart was pounding so loud I could barely hear myself. I’m not marrying you. I can’t.”

Can’t?he repeated, his tone low, mocking. Or won’t?

For a moment, neither of us moved. Then, his jaw tightened, his expression turning darker by the second. You’re still thinking about him, aren’t you?he asked, voice like ice.

My stomach dropped. What?

Beckett. His name rolled off Hunter’s tongue like poison. You still want your bastard

husband back?

That’s not true!I shot back. I don’t know where he was getting all of these. I haven’t even thought about Beckett since he showed up. I’ve been starting to question myself why, after three years of devoting myself to Beckett, Hunter managed to erase all those feelings I had for Beckett.

Hunter’s eyes were burning with something wild. You’re such a good liar. You’re still in love with him.

I’m not,” I insisted. I just don’t want to be in another cage again That’s why I didn’t want to get into this marriage. But most likely, I don’t want to marry him for a show. Part of me wanted this marriage to be as genuine as possible because the truth is, I think I’m falling for him. So, pardon me if I was trying to guard my heart this time. I don’t want this to be like what happened between me and Beckett. I don’t think I can handle it when Hunter realizes that I’ve only trapped him into this.

He let out a bitter laugh, shaking his head. A cage? Is that what you think I’m offering you?His voice rose slightly, anger leaking through. You’re willing to be trapped in a loveless marriage with Beckett, but not with me. Is that it?

Will you please stop bringing his name into this conversation? He has nothing to do with this!

On the contrary, he has everything to do with this,he replied coldly.

Then, the room fell silent. He was glaring at me, and so did I. No one dared

to

back down.

I let out a frustrated sigh, the kind that carried every ounce of exhaustion I felt. You’re impossible, Hunter. Let’s talk again when you’ve cooled your head,” I muttered, my voice trembling somewhere between anger and pleading.

Placing both hands on his chest, I pushedhard. I could feel the solid wall of muscle beneath my palms, the warmth of his body seeping into my skin even as I tried to shove him away. He was much bigger than me, and I wasn’t expecting it to make any difference. It never did before.

But this time, it did.

He actually stepped back. Just one stepbut enough to free me. His arms dropped to his sides, his expression unreadable as he looked down at me, eyes shadowed, jaw tight. He let me go without a fight.

And thatsomehow hurt more than I expected.

I should’ve felt relief. I should’ve felt safe, even triumphant, that he listened and backed off. But instead, a hollow ache bloomed in my chest. It felt like a quiet surrenderlike he was putting distance not just between our bodies, but between our hearts.

It was strange, and maybe even foolish, but I couldn’t help feeling that I’d just pushed away something that, for one fleeting second, felt like it was mine.

I was about to step into our room when I heard his cold voice.

Get ready. We’re leaving in ten minutes.
