Alexander's threat hung in the air, sharp and cold.
Isabella's pupils constricted. She froze, her gaze locking on his throat as he swallowed. Her fingers curled into fists instinctively, panic surging through her. She turned her head away, jaw clenched, deliberately avoiding his eyes.
At this point, she knew better than to provoke him further.
Alexander let out a low chuckle, his tone thick with an unspoken command. "Come to my place."
Isabella was stunned. Her body stiffened, and she did her best to keep her voice steady. "No, take me to the nearest hotel. Otherwise, I'll get out of the car myself."
His hand tightened around hers, the warmth of his grip searing her skin, like a brand. The heat made her want to shrink away.
"Isabella, I'm getting engaged tomorrow," he said suddenly.
There was a trace of hurt in his voice, as if he was waiting for even the smallest reaction from her. If she did, the engagement would be off.
But she didn't respond. She didn't even glance at him. She was completely indifferent. "Congratulations, Mr. Sinclair."
"Isabella, you know that's not what I want to hear from you."
"Alexander!" Isabella forced herself to steady her voice before turning to look at him, her gaze cold. "I came to you today because I had no other options. I need to find Theodore.
"If you're trying to use this to threaten or manipulate me, then take me back to the hospital right now."
Her eyes were blank, showing nothing at all. She needed him to understand one thing.
Whatever lay between them had limits, and she wasn't stepping over them.
Alexander acted strangely today. In the past, if she had spoken to him like this, with his ego, he would've been offended, angry, and left in a huff. But now, it was as if he hadn't heard a word she'd said. He just gently rubbed her fingers, as if she were a toy he was playing with.
He leaned in, his breath warm against her ear, his voice carrying a touch of amusement. "You're trying to find Uncle Theodore? Are you sure you'll be able to find him? Have you considered that he's intentionally hiding, not wanting you to find him?"
